Two Students Awarded with Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame Scholarships

Carmen Lavilla and Orla Lynagh-Shannon
On May 20 the  Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame (CEC) awarded scholarships to two Burlingame High School (BHS) students, Orla Lynagh-Shannon and Carmen Lavilla.

As a child in the Philippines, Carmen routinely accompanied her grandmother to the fish market, where she would look at all the fresh catch available, then return home and look them up in the Encyclopedia of Marine Life. Her coursework in environmental science and biology alerted her to the dangers now facing the oceans. She will attend CSU Monterey Bay, where she plans to major in marine biology.

After meeting a mentor who served as a sustainability officer in the Obama administration and at Google, Orla decided to follow a similar career path. She will attend UCLA next fall, where she plans a double major in international relations and environmental science.
Burlingame Student Named Golfer of the Year

Congratulations to Burlingame High School student Wyatt McGovern, he was named Boys Golfer of the Year by the San Mateo Daily Journal.

From the Daily Journal: " Like all high-level golfers, McGovern has all the tools and like those who have figured it out, it's not so much the physical parts of the game that determines a player's success, but the mental game. It's between the ears where McGovern has excelled."

September 12:  Managing the College Admission Frenzy - Why "Fit" Matters

The college admissions process can be a source of stress and anxiety for students and parents alike. This research-based workshop addresses many of the important questions we hear from families. What do college rankings really measure? Are students who attend more selective colleges better off later in life? What is "fit" and why does it matter?

Participants will learn practical strategies to help reduce unnecessary pressure around the college admissions process and ways to support their student's overall well-being and readiness for life in college and beyond. Participants will leave with practical strategies to apply at home and at school.

Registration will be open in mid August.

Spanish and Chinese interpretation will be provided.

This program is presented by the San Mateo Union High School District in partnership with Stanford University's Challenge Success program and the GATE Parents Group.
