St John the Evangelist Parish

Parish Directories are here!

If you got your picture taken, you will find a directory in the vestibule of the church with your name on it.
We have some extra directories.  If you would like a directory, regardless of whether you had your picture taken, you can pick one up in the parish office from 8-12 and 1-4 Monday through Friday or in the vestibule of the church this weekend.  (While supplies last.)
Annual Catholic Appeal
Our Parish goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal this year is $108,252!! We are going to need everyone's support to make our goal. If you have already given, thank you! If you haven't yet, your participation, regardless of the amount, will make a difference - to you, to us, and to those who benefit from your generosity.

At this time we have received pledges of $52,434  from 163 donors   leaving us with $55,818 still to collect. While it is important to note that if we do not raise this amount through the ACA campaign we must make up the difference through our ordinary income, our hope is that this community will show itself ready to help both the local and the larger Church. Our witness, so important, to Catholics throughout this region, relies upon each person's willingness to act as part of this community.

The  Funeral Mass for Carol Covello will be
Friday, June 21st at 11am in the Church.
There will be a reception in Egan Hall following the Mass.  All are welcome.

The Funeral Mass for Yvonne Khoury (mother of Nagui and Adel Sayah) will be held on Saturday June 22nd at noon. There will be a reception after the mass in Egan Hall. All are welcome.

St John Book Club
Join the St. John book reading The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  Goodreads describes it as a masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a senior tempter in the service of "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.   The Screwtape Letters  is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation-and triumph over it-ever written. It is a short read at 223 pages.
We will meet at parishioner Nancy Busch Allen's home (6526 1st Ave. NW) on Sunday, July 14 at 7:00 PM.

Laudato Si in Action
In the Introduction of Laudato Si, Pope Francis makes it clear that he was not the first pope to call attention to environmental destruction:

Saint John Paul II became increasingly concerned about this issue. In his first Encyclical he warned that human beings frequently seem "to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use and consumption". Subsequently, he would call for a global ecological conversion. At the same time, he noted that little effort had been made to "safeguard the moral conditions for an authentic human ecology". The destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a gift which must be defended from various forms of debasement. Every effort to protect and improve our world entails profound changes in "lifestyles, models of production and consumption, and the established structures of power which today govern societies".

Saint John Paul II first wrote of this as early as 1979 in his first encyclical entitled "Redemptor Hominis", or Redeemer of Man .

As I mentioned in prior columns, my approach to consumption of resources can be summed up with these five words: reduce, reuse, renew, reconsider, and recycle. In prior columns, I discussed reduce and reuse. This time, I'd like to introduce "reconsider".   Read more ...

Four encouragements to live in the PRESENT:

"The Present is the point at which time touches eternity...The Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity.  It is the most completely temporal part of time - for the Past is frozen and no longer flows, and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays...Nearly all vices are rooted in the future.  Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead."  -  A paraphrase of C. S. Lewis in The Screwtape Letters #15.

"You are My beloved Child.  I chose you before the foundation of the world, to walk with Me along paths designed uniquely for you.  Concentrate on keeping in step with Me, instead of trying to anticipate My plans for you.  If you trust that My plans are to prosper you and not to harm you, you can relax and enjoy the present moment."  - from the Facebook page for Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  - Matthew 6:34

"Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." -  Isaiah 43:18-19
