SUMMER PROGRAMMING FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
This summer the children and youth have been taking part in events comprised of the theme:
Who is my neighbor?
On Tuesday, July 9,
the youth toured Sharing House and through authentic discussion learned the difference between toxic charity and accompaniment. Even if the vocabulary is not remembered, the concept was. The youth gathered back at the church to make homemade deodorant to give to Sharing House. They worked hard and had fun!
On Thursday, July 11,
the youth caravanned to the home of Jackie Jenkins and Bobby King. They appreciated God's creation through a King special bird and turtle tour and creative craft time with Jackie. Another enjoyable day!

Wednesday, July 31 - 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Children and youth will work alongside the LCGS Carpenters on projects around the church. Afterwards, the youth and adults will enjoy a lunch provided by the Fellowship Committee.

LADIES OF LCGS SUMMER GATHERING

Wednesday,
July 24
, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. there will be a luncheon for the ladies, spouses, and friends of LCGS at Deerlake Village Cubhouse. Barbara Meyer will be providing sub sandwiches and attendees are invited to bring a salad or dessert to share. The theme of the gathering will be "A Time For All Saints: God given gifts inspire us to follow in the footsteps of the saints." Please join us!

CALL PROCESS UPDATE
The committee met on July 5 and 6 for training, with all members present. Dr. Jack Weller began the first session with a walk through the building and grounds, asking team members to look with the eyes of a visitor. This resulted in several suggestions for minor housekeeping tasks. Some time was spent in a review of the steps in the call process, the Ministry Site Profile and the Congregation/Community information packet. Dr. Weller presented an overview of behavior-based questions for interviews, and the committee then developed a plan and questions for the mock interview. This was a helpful exercise, followed by a debriefing with the interviewee. The training concluded with a review of next steps to be accomplished by the call committee. Each of the meetings with Dr. Weller began and ended with a prayer he had written for the call committee and congregation during this time of discernment, which will be posted on the bulletin board. The call committee has met several times since completion of the training. Questions to be used in interviews have been discussed and rehearsed, as well as an agenda for the interviews.
Ministry Site Profile (MSP) Complete!
The LCGS Ministry Site Profile used in the Call Process has been adopted by the Council, approved by the Call Committee, and submitted to the ELCA for sharing with prospective pastoral candidates. Our "want ad" on the ELCA web site can be seen here:

LEADERSHIP PLANNING CALENDAR
Did you know that each year, the Council works with the various committee chairs and office staff members to develop a "Leadership Planning Calendar?"
Originally intended as a planning tool for the Council, the LPC was restructured this year to improve the visibility of the many activities going on in our congregation each month, as well as to facilitate coordination of efforts between the various church organizations. A copy of the current LPC for the remainder of 2019 is posted on the bulletin board. Take a few minutes to check it out, keeping in mind that it is a "living document" that is updated periodically throughout the year as things are completed or change. Efforts are underway to develop a version of the LPC to be posted somewhere in the Fellowship Hall, not just for the benefit of congregation members, but also as a way to share with the many outside groups that use our facilities that LCGS is a vibrant and active church. We are also exploring ways to include it on the LCGS web site. Questions can be directed to Donna Aiken-Colflesh.

AARP'S HOMEFIT PROGRAM
HELPS YOU SAFELY AGE IN PLACE
AARP's HomeFit program is a self-help tool that enables people to know what the potential safety issues in their home are and provides
solutions to make homes more livable according to one's desires.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY NEWS
As mentioned over the last several weeks in the newsletter and bulletin, Heather Merritt will be stepping down from her position as LCGS Children's Ministry Coordinator effective July 31. The Council is making plans for moving forward following Heather's departure. If you know of someone who is interested in filling the part-time position of Children's Ministry Coordinator, please have him/her directly contact Council President Bob Schuld and/or Council Vice President John Colflesh with the relevant background information as soon as possible.

SMALL GROUP AT SHARING HOUSE
Last month, Outreach Ministry Coordinator Kimberly Dunbar led a journaling and discussion small group at Sharing House that was focused on the theme of hope. A total of eight people attended the group, which was offered in response to Sharing House's invitation to local organizations to offer small groups focused on health to their neighbors. Kimberly will lead a second session of this small group on July 25, which will focus on the theme of peace. Members of Good Shepherd are welcome to attend.

COLLECTION FOR DSS
Last spring, Good Shepherd collected items needed by children who are involved with our local Department of Social Services. Robert McKeown and Kimberly Dunbar recently met with one of the program managers of the Child Protective Services unit, who let us know what items are currently needed. If you can donate any of these items, please place them in the bin labeled "Collection for DSS" on the pew in the commons:
- socks (new, all children's sizes needed)
- shampoo
- conditioner
- deodorant
- hairbrushes, combs and picks
- body wash or soap (if bars, individually wrapped, please)
- sanitary pads
- tampons
Why Are We in Partnership with DSS?
The Reimagining Health Collaborative (RHC) team at Good Shepherd has been focusing on mental health and building community partnerships since its inception two years ago. One of our areas of focus is trauma and resiliency, and being in partnership with DSS is one way that we can accompany others who have experienced trauma.

A FINAL NEWSLETTER FROM ONE OF THE SENEGAL YAGMS
Good Shepherd helps to support the work of Pastor Kristin Engstrom in Senegal, who is the Country Coordinator for the Young Adults in Global Mission program there. During this past year, we've gotten to know the six young adults placed under her leadership through their newsletters and blog posts.
Their year of service has just come to an end, and they are now figuring out how to transition back to their homes and/or are discerning their next steps in life. This is likely a much more complicated process than many of us realize.
Here is the final newsletter from Rachel O., one of the Senegal YAGMs. Before reading it, she asks that people first read a blog post written by the YAGM coordinator in Mexico that provides information about the adjustment process.

WHAT BISHOPS DO
Here is the reflection for July from Bishop Tim Smith of the NC Synod.
I've spent last week from early each morning until dark each night at Lenoir-Rhyne University with 13 high schoolers from all over Region 9 in the ELCA. Though "Bishops' School" has been happening for decades, several years ago it started rotating around to happen on the territory of the six Region 9 synods (comprising eight states, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands). This year is the first year in its long history that the event has been in North Carolina. The school is a chance for high school students to dive deep into theology. Some of them are interested in professional church vocations. Some aren't.

"GOD'S CALLING ME TO SOMETHING MORE."
Brad Alexander has spent the last thirteen years working as a purchasing agent for a company that installs windows, exterior doors, mirrors, and bath accessories for new construction homes. On most Sunday mornings, you can find Brad at Redeemer, Gastonia, where he's the congregation council president, an adult Sunday school teacher, and more. (Just don't look for him in the choir; he's not a singer.) Victor Parrish is a retired barber and hair stylist; he's also a lifelong church musician. Victor has been the pianist at The Arbor, Lexington, for about 16 years and helps lead all the worship services. Last September, Brad and Victor, along with twelve others with equally unique stories, became part of the first cohort of the Lay Preaching Certification Program in the NC Synod.
