WIRES Newsletter - Q4 2020
Message from our Executive Director
Goodbye 2020 - Hello 2021! WIRES is already seeing a lot of change -- and opportunity. Our slate of officers is in place and hard at work. Congratulations to David Weaver, Will Sauer, Kelly Pearce, and Jodi Moskowitz. Also, a big welcome to new Board Member (and immediate past President) Tom Hestermann, who joins our returning Board Members Nina Plaushin, Brian Gemmell, David Bonenberger, and Priti Patel. WIRES is well positioned with a strong leadership team to address the significant challenges facing transmission infrastructure in the year ahead.

With the election results finalized, there are major changes coming at the federal level. For the first time in two years, we have a full complement of FERC Commissioners. A new FERC Chairman will be named shortly, and by mid to late 2021, a likely new Commissioner added, giving the Democrats a majority at FERC. In Congress, the outcome of the Georgia Senate runoff positions Senator Joe Manchin as the likely next chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. WIRES looks forward to working with all of these key policymakers in their new roles as they tackle the issues and challenges facing transmission infrastructure in the coming year and beyond. As Sen. Manchin stated in his Keynote Address at WIRES’ Fall Meeting, “groups like WIRES have a central role to play in helping us navigate the policy, legal, and technological challenges. Your perspective is valuable, and I encourage you all to work with us on the Energy Committee to find common solutions.”

The Fall meeting also featured two panel discussions: Integration of Renewables and Impact on Transmission, and Resilience and the Grid. Among our esteemed panelists were Joe Kelliher, former EVP of Federal Regulatory Affairs at NextERA Energy and former FERC Chairman; and the Hon. Macro Grid Initiative (MGI)
WIRES formally endorsed the Macro Grid Initiative’s Vision Statement. Larry’s statement:

WIRES welcomes the Macro Grid Initiative (MGI) - an important new industry voice - to the growing number of industry leaders calling for the strategic expansion of the high-voltage transmission grid. Our members support the MGI vision of upgrading and expanding the nation’s transmission network with the accruing benefits of driving jobs and economic development, a cleaner environment, a more reliable and resilient grid, and lower costs for consumers. We anticipate 2021 will be a pivotal year for addressing the pressing need for more transmission, and we encourage state and national policymakers to sharpen their focus on enabling these critical benefits.”
