J-School wins CASE Circle of Excellence Award

The J-School won a silver award in the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards for last year's William Allen White 150th Birthyear Celebration.
CASE received 3,204 entries for consideration in nearly 100 categories by 676 member higher education institutions, independent schools and nonprofits from around the world.

Assistant Professor Teri Finneman
won the second annual Michael S. Sweeney Award for her article, “‘The Greatest of Its Kind Ever Witnessed in America’: The Press and the 1913 Women’s March on Washington.” Presented by the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the Sweeney Award recognizes the outstanding article published in the previous volume of the scholarly journal Journalism History.
Finneman also discussed her book, "Press Portrayals of Women Politicians, 1870s-2000s," at a League of Women Voters event at Watkins Museum in mid-May.
Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski
will receive the Scholastic Journalism Division’s David Adams Journalism Educator of the Year Award during the SJD’s meeting at the AEJMC annual convention in Toronto, Canada, in August. Bobkowski will be honored Aug. 9 with a plaque and honorarium.
Strategic Communication Chair Kerry Benson
met with journalism instructors from the Blue Valley Unified School District on May 28 to help them learn fundamental best practices for introducing strategic communication into their journalism curriculum.
Jim McCrossen
, 1984 J-School graduate, instructor of journalism at Blue Valley Northwest High School and Kansas Scholastic Press Association president, requested the collaboration. The Blue Valley Unified School District encompasses 91 square miles in southeastern Johnson County, Kansas, and has a student population of more than 23,000.
Mark Johnson
gave the keynote address titled "
Navigating Through the Ever-Changing Global Trade Landscape"
at the 2019 Kansas International Trade Day on June 4 in Manhattan, Kansas. The event was hosted by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Testing popular news discourse on the 'echo chamber' effect: Does political polarization occur among those relying on social media as their primary political news source?” has been accepted to
First Monday.
Vu co-authors the article with An Nguyen from University of Bournemouth, U.K. The analysis found little evidence for ideological partisanship, lending credence to a rejection of social media’s “echo chamber” effect. The study will be published in June 2019.
