REGISTER NOW: SEPT. 23 HEALTH POLICY FORUM TO EXPLORE IMPACT OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA ON PUBLIC HEALTH
Registration is now open for a statewide forum on medical marijuana to be hosted by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky on September 23 in Lexington. The forum is not intended to change minds about whether marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes, said CEO Ben Chandler. Rather, speakers will share facts and data about how best to promote the health, wellbeing and safety of Kentuckians as lawmakers consider new policies around medical cannabis in the Commonwealth.

RAISING TOBACCO AGE TO 21 PROMISES TO SAVE LIVES, IMPROVE HEALTH
Nearly everyone who smokes started when they were kids or young adults. In Kentucky, smoking kills 8,900 people and racks up $1.92 billion in health care expenditures every year. If we can find effective ways to keep our kids from becoming addicted to tobacco, we have a shot at significantly reducing the heavy price we all pay in illness, death and extra taxes tied to Kentucky's high rates of tobacco use.

Become a Graphic Ally! Learn how to tell visual data stories to inspire policy change and mobilize information at the grassroots level. In this free hands-on workshop, we will explore and apply principles of conscious and responsible design to a real-world infographic project.
Topics covered are as follows: icon drafting, infographic composition, power dynamics in design, data framing, asset vs. deficit mapping, access to information, and grassroots design strategies.
Learn how to map out infographic solutions for reaching and activating policy makers, people with resources, low-opportunity communities, and more.

KRHA is now accepting poster proposals for the 2019 conference on November 14th and 15th in Bowling Green, KY. Submitted poster proposals are required to have a policy focus related to the health of rural Kentuckians. Abstract submissions are due by July 15th, 2019.

DrugFreeLex and the Tobacco Committee recently released three striking public service announcements (PSAs) on JUUL. These face-paced, fact-based PSAs, designed to target parents, teachers, administrators and other working with youth, are free for all to use. Each video includes facts about JUUL and other e-cigarettes. These short ads provide insight into the chemicals in JUUL and their harmful effects, the rising popularity of JUUL, why youth may be more susceptible to e-cigarette use and addiction, and why e-cigarettes are especially damaging for teens including negative health costs and long-term adverse health effects.

Stanford Tobacco Prevention Toolkit Training
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department Tobacco Program will host training sessions for the Stanford University School of Medicine Youth Tobacco Prevention Toolkit during March 2019. The "Toolkit" is a nationally recognized, evidence-based curriculum. It is more comprehensive than typical tobacco prevention curricula because it includes content designed to improve general adolescent health vs. focusing only on tobacco. It is free to use, and contains seven modules with ready-made activities, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and worksheets.
This training is free, and Kentucky educators, adult stakeholders, and anyone interested in youth tobacco prevention are invited to attend. See below for more information about the training, and learn more about the "Toolkit" at https://med.stanford.edu/tobaccopreventiontoolkit.html

10-Minute Walk Planning Grant and Technical Assistance
Through the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, National Recreation and Park Association with support from The JPB Foundation, is excited to offer grants and technical assistance to support planning efforts that help cities increase access to high-quality parks within a 10-minute walk. In the third round of grants 10 cities will receive $40,000 to work alongside NRPA, The Trust for Public Land (TPL), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to develop their highest, best, and measurable commitment to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign.
