December 20, 2018
Dear Colleague,

This is the final bulletin for 2018 and on behalf of our board of directors and team at our offices in Washington DC, I want to thank you for your engagement and support for CUGH. In these times of increasing instability, I think it is important for us to remember that the global health work done by you and our colleagues around the world is a vital bulwark against exclusion, inequality, and policies that can harm the wellbeing of people and that of our planet. Thank you for what you are doing to address these challenges.

We look forward to engaging with you in the new year and hope to see you at our conference in Chicago, March 7-10, 2019. Leading representatives from academia, NGOs and governments will be present along with 1800 colleagues from over 50 countries to learn, share knowledge and build new partnerships that can help address the global health challenges before us. Please register at www.cugh2019.org for the (mostly free) satellite sessions on March 7th.

From all of us at CUGH I to wish you and yours a Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Sincerely,

Keith Martin, MD, PC
Executive Director

The African Academy of Sciences Launches a Global Standard for Transparent Research and Humanitarian Funding

The African Academy of Sciences (The AAS) launched the Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP), a global standard to promote transparency and strengthen the governance of grant funding worldwide.

The GFGP standard, developed in collaboration with the African Organization for Standardisation (ARSO), is the first such tool developed in Africa for international use.

Initially created as an African standard, the GFGP has attracted increasing interest ahead of its launch from multiple funders and grantees in Asia, South America and the UK, where government organisations have tested and endorsed it.

The GFGP was officially launched at the Science Forum South Africa in Pretoria, South Africa, on 12 December 2018.

The enabling platform allows community-based organisations, NGOs, research and academic institutions of any size to rate their capability to receive and manage grants. It provides an online self-assessment tool covering four grant management practice areas -financial management, human resources, procurement and governance - adopted by ARSO to promote transparency in the use of funds by local organisations to mitigate the risk of fraud and corruption.

Applications for the Rx One Health Summer Institute are Now Open

The Rx One Health Summer Institute  is a 4-week long, field-based experiential course  designed to provide a "prescription" for advanced students and early career professionals to prepare them for immediate engagement in global health careers that will demand effective problem-solving skills, cross-disciplinary engagements, and solid foundations in field and laboratory activities.  Over the course of the program, participants train on the principles of One Health-the approach that recognizes that the health of people, animals, and their environments are interconnected, and that problem solving to address health challenges is best achieved through transdisciplinary collaboration. Through hands-on, practical learning experiences, case studies, lectures, group discussions and field exercises, the Rx One Health program develops participants' skills for addressing complex challenges using a One Health approach.

New "Reasoning Without Resources" Case Now Available

These teaching cases are based on Professor Paccione's decades of teaching experience on the medical wards of Kisoro District Hospital in Uganda. They are designed for those practicing in low resource settings, Medicine and Family Medicine residents, and senior medical students interested in clinical global health. Each case is presented in two parts. First comes a case vignette (presenting symptoms, history, basic lab and physical exam findings) along with 6-10 discussion questions that direct clinical reasoning and/or highlight diagnostic issues. One month later CUGH will post detailed instructors notes for the case along with a new case vignette/questions.
