Whitefish Trail Report
July 2021
Stormy skies from Lion Mountain. Photo Tristan Scott
The dog days of summer have finally arrived in the Flathead Valley. Weeklong blistering sun has been tempered by soaking thunderstorms, feeding our local crop of huckleberries.

Avid berry pickers have been buzzing with anticipation these past few weeks, and it always seems to anchor some early-summer conversations. Our local huckleberry-picking elders have anecdotal climate knowledge that fosters both predictions for the upcoming season and reflections on past bumper crops.

Will this year's perfect combination of heat and intermittent rain provide the boost to grow plump but also perfectly sweet berries? Time will only tell as our low elevation bushes start to ripen. The Whitefish Trail is the perfect place to explore for these early season 'trail snacks', and Beaver Lakes is a great place to start. There's over 16 miles of trail surrounded by thousands of acres of public land and more berries than can be picked.

The abundance of huckleberries not only feeds legendary pies at Loula's, but they are also a critical food source for many local animals including black and grizzly bears. As you get out to tromp through the woods, take your bear spray and know how to use it. Pick with a friend, and be sure to make plenty of noise when entering thick undergrowth. If you need to brush up on bear safety including a demonstration on how to use bear spray, review the Bear Aware web page at Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.

Our Whitefish Trail Coordinator, Sam, and hard-working volunteers have been busy with some major maintenance projects including new crib staircase to enjoy the lakeshore and bench at Spencer Lake. If you see Sam and volunteers working on the trail, say thanks for working through the heat!

The Whitefish Trail has been busy in early mornings as trail users avoid the hottest part of the day. Wildflowers continue to bloom amidst bright green undergrowth, and a few trees have come down during the recent storms. Keep sending us your trail reports!
