Linda Stein's 'Displacement Art'
What do we reach for when
we have to flee?

by Eleanor J Bader
The Progressive
March 4, 2019

Linda Stein knows first-hand
about being uprooted from  her home by violence.

"I was displaced from my lower Manhattan apartment for eight months following the attacks of September 11," the New York City-based artist tells me. "While I know that this is inconsequential compared to what people are dealing with in Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Central America, it nonetheless prompted me to think differently and more deeply about the issue." What do people who are forced to leave their homes take with them, Stein wondered. What do they leave behind? How do they feel about the
objects they abandon?

Deferring to Men

(A version of this article first appeared in Women's eNews.)

"Growing up female in the 1950s, I learned that ladylike postures, specifically with legs crossed either at the knees or ankles, and hands in lap, were mandatory for a female. But female restrictions went deeper than just posture, as we accepted the cultural norm of displaying deference to men in words and demeanor."
