Caregiver Support & Education Network: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Tuesday, August 24, 2021, 12:00 PM

This month's Caregiver Support and Education Network (CSEN) meeting will be devoted to sleep and its vital role for caregivers and their loved ones. Caregiving certainly can be exhausting, and nights of uninterrupted sleep can be rare. Getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night can help reduce risks of health problems like forgetfulness, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. Unfortunately, one in three adults don’t get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need to protect their health.

Email worklife@cornell.edu for the Zoom link.

Also, check out the #ScienceOfSleep Across the Lifespan Q&A Series on Facebook to learn how sleep impacts health at every age. This series is co-hosted by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Events in the series include Science of Sleep and Older Adults Q&A: Tuesday, August 24 at 2:30 pm. Watch on NIA's Facebook page.

The Johnson Museum's summer reading series concludes with Nancy Green and Maryterese Pasquale-Bowen discussing one more great art-based reading adventure.

Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art chronicles the escapades of con man John Drewe and artist John Myatt. Not just a story about forging art, this true-life tale takes an art scam to the next level, with the manufacturing of convincing documentation verifying the provenance of the bogus artworks.

What’s “Bugging” You? First Friday Education Events

In this free, monthly virtual CALS series, learn about integrated pest management (IPM) to avoid problems and promote a healthy environment where you live, work, learn and play. IPM is a holistic approach that uses different tools and practices to not only reduce pest problems but also address the reasons why pests are there in the first place. Each month, our speakers will share practical information about how you can use IPM.

Events will be held on the first Friday of every month from 12:00 to 12:30 PM via Zoom. Each month a timely topic will be covered in 25 minutes, including opportunities for questions.

Coming up next: September 3: Keeping pests -- from stink bugs to mice -- out of your home this fall.

Seeking Intake Assistants
As part of Cornell University’s public health measures to address the spread of the delta variant and the increased prevalence of COVID-19 on our campus and in our region, we will continue the surveillance testing that we began in Fall 2020. Cornell University was highlighted on Good Morning America last fall for our unique testing approach. Members of this workgroup played a significant role in limiting the spread of the virus on campus which led to a successful 2020-2021 academic year.

We are looking for individuals to contribute to this meaningful effort as we prepare to kick off the 2021-2022 academic year. We are primarily seeking candidates to fill full-time (35 hours per week) temporary positions through December 15th. We will also consider part-time candidates (up to 19 hours per week). Full-time individuals will be eligible for Contract College health insurance.

Individuals will be trained in patient verification and registration protocols as well as observation and management of self-sampled specimen collection. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment will be provided. Working conditions may include indoor and/or outdoor settings, and standing or sitting for extended periods. Additionally, you may be asked to work on special projects and support the training of student employees as needed.

You must be comfortable using a script to give directions and clearly communicate the sampling process and site protocols. You must also be able and willing to use a tablet, stylus, and barcode reader while wearing gloves.

Science in the Virtual Pub: Burgess Shale: Antiquated and Updated Preservation Theories
Wednesday, August 25, 2021, 6:00 PM
Dr. Kimberly Meehan, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Geology, University at Buffalo

The Burgess Shale may be the world’s most famous fossil bed. In 1907 Dr. Charles Doolittle stumbled upon a fossil bed that contained the oldest known macrofaunal community known. These fossils were buried for over 500 million years in black shale that contained every phylum of organisms that exists on the planet today; all seemingly appearing instantaneously in the rock record. Since Burgess’s discovery, similar preserved deposits have been found around the globe, but – outside of occurring in the Cambrian Period – not even one of these localities parallels the conditions of the original Burgess Shale location. Despite advances in technology and understanding of sedimentary, metamorphic, hydrothermal, and microbial processes acting on decaying materials, the explanation of black shale anoxic conditions in preservation persists.

Silent Movie Under the Stars
Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 8:00 PM at Taughannock Falls State Park
(rain date is Sunday, August 29)

A popular end-of-summer tradition continues Saturday, August 28, 2021, when Wharton Studio Museum (WSM), in partnership with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, proudly presents its 11th annual Silent Movie Under the Stars at Taughannock Falls State Park in Trumansburg.

This year WSM brings a recently restored Sherlock Holmes (1916) to the big screen under the night sky. Long considered lost, the film was located and then restored in January of 2015 as a collaboration between the Cinematheque Francaise and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Directed by Arthur Berthelet, the film stars William Gillette, an actor, playwright, and stage manager in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best remembered for portraying the iconic detective on stage and in this film.

Bring a picnic, lawn chair, blanket, and sweater, and come early to enjoy lovely Taughannock Falls State Park and live string music by Rick Manning (mandolin, fiddle) and Tom Hodgson (guitar) between 6:45 PM and 8:00 PM.

The screening is FREE. A $5 per vehicle parking fee in the park benefits WSM.

For more information, please contact Diana Riesman, Executive Director of WSM at 607-592-3017.
