The attacks in Sri Lanka on the holiest day of the Christian year is the antithesis of everything Easter is about. ACPE's commitment to deep understanding among and between people of different faiths or no faith feels more relevant than ever. We trust that such violence is horrific to all people, and we are called to stand in the tragic gap between the world as it should be and the tragic terror that is all too apparent.
Your Gifts at Work: CPE through Cultural Immersion
With your support, the Foundation for ACPE granted a $5,000 Innovative Program Award to Baylor Scott & White Health to develop cultural competences for chaplains by placing them in diverse faith communities as part of their CPE training.

Led by ACPE Certified Educators Satoe Soga and Mark Grace, the "Cultural Immersion" program matches CPE students with a host family who is different culturally or religiously and belongs to a minority faith community.
Funding for Innovative CPE Projects
The 2019 Innovative Program Awards funding cycle is now open!

Funded by a portion of funds raised through the Sowing Seeds for our Holy Work Annual Campaign, Innovative Program Awards support ACPE members and/or centers in the achievement of ACPE's Strategic Initiatives. Specifically, these innovative projects allow ACPE to support the development and dissemination of new and experimental programs that extend CPE into atypical settings, test and disseminate new pastoral/spiritual care theology and education, and/or develop new research concepts and methodologies.

Joann Heaney-Hunter, Interim Psychotherapy Commission, Chair
With ACPE's Annual Conference just a few weeks away, the interim Psychotherapy Commission is working diligently on issues of membership requirements and standards. As we move forward, we hope to welcome many new members into ACPE as psychotherapists and practitioners, retired members, and student members. In addition, we want to create pathways for eligible student members to move into the practitioner membership category and for practitioner members to qualify as psychotherapists in the near future. We will lay the foundation for these policies during our first in-person meeting in Scottsdale on May 10th and will share updates on our progress in future newsletters.

Update from the Interim Psychotherapy Commission: Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy (SIP)
Russell Siler Jones,
Interim Psychotherapy Commission Member
Mental health professionals are hungry for training in spirituality. Our professional colleagues across the psychotherapy spectrum-social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, addiction specialists, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors-want to know what pastoral counselors have known for decades: how to work respectfully within the belief- and value-systems of those they serve, while also drawing on their own belief- and value-systems to understand themselves, the people they serve, and the nature of transformation and healing.

New Resource: Topics in Bioethics
Check out our new Resource Library on the Members' Site Home Page in SharePoint!.

In the library, you will find a series of short presentations, discussion guides, and reference lists for topics in bioethics. The series was voluntary developed by Dr. Carrie Fisher, a community member on the Children's Hospital, Los Angeles (CHLA) Spiritual Care Advisory Committee where she facilitates a monthly ethics discussion group with the staff and student chaplains.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
Carrie Newcomer has a lovely song called "Holy is the Day." Kathleen Norris gave lectures at Yale a few years ago titled "The Quotidian Mysteries: Laundry, Liturgy, and 'Women's Work'." Marie Howe makes this offering, a reminder of the simple, daily routines amidst these high holy days for so many:
"What the Living Do" by Marie Howe

Johnny, the kitchen sink has been clogged for days, some utensil probably
fell down there.
And the Drano won't work but smells dangerous, and the crusty dishes
have piled up

waiting for the plumber I still haven't called. This is the everyday we
spoke of.
It's winter again: the sky's a deep headstrong blue, and the sunlight
pours through

the open living room windows because the heat's on too high in here, and
I can't turn it off.
For weeks now, driving, or dropping a bag of groceries in the street,
the bag breaking,

I've been thinking: This is what the living do. And yesterday, hurrying
along those
wobbly bricks in the Cambridge sidewalk, spilling my coffee down my
wrist and sleeve,

I thought it again, and again later, when buying a hairbrush: This is it.
Parking. Slamming the car door shut in the cold. What you called
that yearning.

What you finally gave up. We want the spring to come and the winter to
pass. We want
whoever to call or not call, a letter, a kiss--we want more and more and
then more of it.

But there are moments, walking, when I catch a glimpse of myself in the
window glass,
say, the window of the corner video store, and I'm gripped by a cherishing
so deep

for my own blowing hair, chapped face, and unbuttoned coat that I'm
speechless:
I am living, I remember you.
