UPCOMING: CHAIR'S INITIATIVE AND BINATIONAL AG EXCHANGE

CWAG Chair, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas announces his 2020 Chair's Initiative, which will focus on using technology to strengthen our economy and improve the delivery of justice. Please mark your calendars and prepare to engage in a dialogue on these important topics!

Building on CWAG-AGAs Data Privacy, Anti-Human Trafficking and Consumer Protection efforts, this Initiative will feature an in-depth conversation to discuss utilizing technology to strengthen our economy and improve public safety outcomes.

Through this initiative, state attorneys general will jointly address cyber security as one of the greatest threats to our nation. Expanded collaboration among leading privacy and security researchers, academics, industry representatives, consumer advocates, law enforcement and government entities will address and offer mutual solutions for national and international cyber security concerns.

Initiative themes will include:
  • Protecting Children, Families and Consumers
  • Protecting Personal Data Privacy
  • Protecting Against Human Trafficking

Vermont Attorney General Donovan Advises State Towns To Consider Taking Part In National Lawsuit Against Drugmakers

Attorney General TJ Donovan is advising Vermont towns to consider being part of a national lawsuit that seeks to make drug companies liable for creating an epidemic of opioid addiction.

Donovan sent a letter recently to mayors, select boards and town managers around the state outlining their options in the ongoing federal litigation against the drugmakers.
Wisconsin Kaul Announces 3 Counties and 1 Tribe to Establish Treatment Courts; 7 Counties to Expand Current Treatment Alternatives and Diversion Programs

Attorney General Josh Kaul, alongside Governor Tony Evers and members of the Wisconsin State Legislature, announced that more counties and one tribe will be offering more treatment court and diversion (TAD) programs in Wisconsin. These new and expanded programs are funded by an additional $1.5 million over the biennium, made available through the 2019-2021 State Budget.
Arizona Attorney General Brnovich Urges SCOTUS To Accept Jurisdiction and Rule in Arizona’s Fraudulent Transfer Action Involving Purdue Pharma and the Sackler Family

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich filed a reply brief urging the United States Supreme Court (“SCOTUS”) to take up the State’s case against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the prescription opioid painkiller OxyContin, and eight members of the Sackler family who owned and controlled the company.

The State alleges the Sackler family funneled billions of dollars away from Purdue Pharma after they became aware the company was facing massive financial liabilities for their alleged role in the opioid crisis. In order to effectively and expeditiously recover the alleged illegal transfer of funds, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office filed an original Bill of Complaint with SCOTUS against Purdue and members of the Sackler family earlier this year. The State’s July 31st filing came before Purdue filed for bankruptcy.

Attorney General Becerra and Los Angeles Leaders Announce Lawsuit Against JUUL for Deceptive Marketing Practices Targeting Underage Californians and Endangering Users of Its Vaping Products

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey and the County of Los Angeles announced a lawsuit against San Francisco-based electronic cigarette maker, JUUL, Labs, Inc (JUUL). The lawsuit alleges that—contrary to the company’s claims that its product is aimed only at adults – JUUL targeted young people through advertising and failed to give warnings about the product’s chemical exposure and risks for cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm. It also alleges that JUUL unlawfully failed to verify the age of California consumers and then violated the privacy rights of minors by keeping the personal email addresses of underage individuals who failed age verification on their website and using those email addresses to send them marketing materials.

Hawaii Attorney General Connors Announces Results of Operation Keiki Shield

Attorney General Clare E. Connors announced that the Department of the Attorney General, through its Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and along with numerous county, federal and military law enforcement partners conducted an unprecedented series of law enforcement operations through 2019 aimed at protecting Hawaii’s keiki.

Washington Attorney General Ferguson Garners First-Ever Conviction Under Animal Trafficking Act
November 14, 2019

Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that Donald Frank Rooney of Everett has pleaded guilty to trafficking in species threatened with extinction under a voter-approved initiative banning the sale or transfer of products made from certain endangered species.
