ICA's Game Changer program is so much more than just job skills and workplace training!
I'm from Uganda. I came to Canada in June 2019 through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. It was a difficult and long (4 year) process but it was worth it. When I arrived, I had no idea how to do anything. Canada is so different from Uganda!
Shortly after I arrived in Victoria, my case worker at ICA told me about the new Game Changer program and it really was a game changer for me. I learned how to write a resume, apply for jobs, and how to talk to employers. I now understand the Canadian workplace better, what my rights are, and also how to be a responsible worker.
I know some people don't want to study, but we didn't just sit in a classroom. We went on field-trips to various workplaces and we even went canoeing with Power To Be which was amazing. My English really improved while doing this program, too.
Many jobs that I was looking at required experience, but through Game Changer the staff worked with employers to offer on-the-job training and waived the requirement for previous work experience.
I now have a job at Dairy Queen and attend English level 5 classes. When I achieve level 12, I want to apply for the Nursing Program at Camosun College.
The support ICA continues to offer even after graduating from Game Changers is so valuable. Being able to call my instructors when I don't understand something that is happening at work is amazing.
Thank you ICA!
Next Session for Game Changer is February 10, 2020
