From the Board
Dear Members,

These are strange times. We are experiencing a slow and careful re-opening of Ontario, and a continuing call for greater equity and justice. For Jews, the holiday of Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of Av, has just passed. Historically, it commemorates the destruction of the Temples and the exile to Babylon. Still, the years in Babylon gave rise to many of our most important teachings, including the Babylonian Talmud. If you would like to read more about Tisha B’Av, click here: https://www.reconstructingjudaism.org/article/pondering-meaning-tisha-bav.

As we begin to approach the High Holidays, the Days of Awe, we might want to think about what we've learned in social isolation, what we’ve missed, and what we've discovered we can live without. Perhaps we might appreciate this month before the High Holidays as an opportunity to reflect on our experience and consider what the year ahead might bring us, renewed and refreshed from an enforced “time out.”

The Board and two volunteers, Amy Matchen and Eden Nameri, are working closely with Rabbi Lithwick, Chazzan Daniela Gesundheit and others to plan unique and meaningful High Holiday services for September.

We need your support! Members and volunteers are the lifeblood of Shir Libeynu. Memberships sustain us throughout the year and enable us to provide services and other programs. Volunteers serve on the board and committees, plan and present programs, and contribute in so many other ways to support and strengthen the congregation.

You can purchase your membership by clicking here. Please also consider making a donation to the Community Membership Fund to help us continue to be affordable to everyone and to honour our Rabbi Emerita Aviva Goldberg.

Would you like to chant Torah on the first day of Rosh Hashanah or on Yom Kippur? Would you like to do a reading at one of our High Holiday Services? You will be able to chant or read from home. Please let us know soon! Email us at slboard@shirlibeynu.ca.

Thinking about getting more involved with Shir Libeynu? We are looking for members to join our Education Committee. Do you have children or grandchildren, or are you interested in children/youth programming? Do you have connections to the wider Jewish community to help us collaborate with other shuls and organizations? Most important, can you bring energy, enthusiasm and new ideas? Please contact Jon Novick at education@shirlibeynu.ca.

Stay well,
Board of Directors
