It's 2021. 365 days of new choices. 365 days of new opportunities. How you take advantage of the opportunities is a choice. For me, and I hope for you, 2020 is behind us. There’s no sense in dwelling on the challenges of last year. What makes sense is focusing on the opportunities ahead of us. For CID essential workers, like managers and your invaluable Industry Partners, it’s taking care of your clients, taking care of your company, taking care of your family, and not necessarily in that order.

2020 had its challenges, there's no denying it. But I’m a strong believer that challenges always present an opportunity. An opportunity to exchange views, refine, define or attain a goal. Opportunity means a chance to grow, change, and learn new things and to do things better than before – as individuals and as a team. It could be a career opportunity, or the opportunity to meet with a prospective new client, or to further pursue education. Opportunities are endless. They never stop coming.

We’re in a pandemic. I get it. We’re still sheltering in place in many areas. But that shouldn’t stop you. You know the old saying, “if the door doesn’t open, go through the window?" I use, "If the door doesn’t open, knock it in." Sometimes we need to create our own opportunity.

You are managers and Industry Partners. You are professionals at what you do. We’re here to offer you some of those opportunities. Our upcoming Open House and Law Seminars are being held in our virtual platform, CMWorld. The pandemic closed the door on all of us. CACM kicked the door in and created an engaging and fun environment where you can move around, talk one-on-one with people, meet with the incredible Industry Partners and your colleagues and have engaging and meaningful conversations. The only thing you need to do is see the opportunity and walk through the door that we’ve kicked in for you. Join us, please.

I look forward to “seeing” you very soon!

Education Department Updates
What Ethics Class Should I Take?
At CACM, we believe that the work of a community manager begins and ends with demonstrating the highest level of ethical behavior. This is why we require all members seeking their initial CCAM as well as all those renewing their CCAM, attend an ethics course.

CACM offers three different ethics courses. All provide four hours of instruction. Currently, the course has been divided into two, 2-hour sessions. The course titles are CMM 101-102 Foundational Ethics for Community Managers; LDR 500 Advanced Ethics: Leadership and Decision-Making; and LDR 550: Ethics Mastery. Many members are not sure which one to take so here is a brief synopsis of each of our ethics offerings:

CMM 101-102 Foundational Ethics for Community Managers – This ethics course introduces candidates pursuing their initial CCAM certification to the basic principles of ethics as well as the CACM Professional Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. In addition to attending the course session(s), students must successfully complete the end-of-course exam.

LDR 500 Advanced Ethics: Leadership and Decision-Making – This ethics course is designed for those members seeking to fulfill the recertification. Please note that the class was redesigned in 2019 so if you have not taken the Advanced Ethics course since that date, this is the course you should register for. In addition to attending the course session(s), students must successfully complete the end-of-course exam. If you are not sure, you can check your online Status Report at www.cacm.org or email Debbie Griffiths, your Certification and Credentialing Advisor at dgriffiths@cacm.org.

LDR 550 Ethics Mastery – This ethics course is designed for those members who have been in the industry for at least five years and have completed at least one recertification cycle. The course format is that of Round Table analytical discussions of real case studies developed by the CACM Ethics Advisory Committee. There is no PowerPoint to guide instruction but rather portfolios of information needed to engage analysis of authentic manager challenges. There is no end-of-course exam.

If you have any additional questions, please contact our Education & Credentialing Advisor, Debbie Griffiths, at dgriffiths@cacm.org.
