Winter Recess
and Masks
Our students will go outside for recess whenever the weather cooperates within our outdoor protocols. However, teachers noticed that masks get damp during recess. As a result, we ask that all families please send in an additional mask so that students can change them after recess.

We thank you for your support!

Coming Soon!
NWEA Testing
February 1 - 14

It's that time of year again for winter standardized testing. This mid-year assessment for students in grades K - 8 will provide an additional avenue of academic insight regarding your child's scholastic progress.

This year, our testing window is February 1 - 12, 2021. To help avoid scheduling conflicts, teachers will notify you of a testing schedule closer to these dates. If a child becomes ill, make up tests will be scheduled for a later date when they are healthy.

As for now, we are continuing the Screening Form admittance process into the school. If you would like to print copies at home please click HERE.

Please remember, Mrs. Palka always has extra copies at the 100 Wing entrance, and Mrs. Yeskie has extras at the HUB entrance.

Happy New Year!
How is your 20/20 vision?
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  Jeremiah 29:11
If you have ever needed corrective lenses, you know the blessing of clear sight. My vision started to deteriorate when I was in the third grade, and by the time my nearsightedness plateaued, my prescription was a -8 in one eye and a -7 in the other. My glasses were so incredibly thick that you could barely see my eyes. Contact lenses were a welcomed blessing when I turned sixteen.

Eight years ago, the growth of cataracts in both of my eyes required surgery and the insertion of new man-made, lenses restored my sight to perfect 20/20 vision. In the blink of an eye (no pun intended), I had a new sense of clarity. I was able to experience a brilliance in colors that I was not accustomed to, and I saw things that I had never noticed. My new and perfect 20/20 vision literally changed so many areas of my life.

Just as 20/20 is synonymous with perfect vision, in a similar sense, the year 2020 gave all of us a new sense of vision and/or perspective as our lives were dramatically affected by the COVID pandemic. So... how did God grow your 20/20 vision this past year? For myself, the year 2020 expanded my vision of gratitude, creative problem solving skills, perseverance, and trust and appreciation for God's ultimate power and protection.

As we begin this New Year, we praise God for His hand of protection throughout these unprecedented times and we rejoice knowing that He will continue to lead us through any additional uncertainties of this pandemic. God uses all things for good; may all the lessons that we learned throughout 2020 enhance our abilities to grow closer to and more like Jesus throughout 2021 as we cling to and boldly profess this year's school theme, "There Is No Impossible With God!"

Happy New Year!

In Jesus' Love,
Mrs. Palka

Expressions of Gratitude

During the last week of school before Christmas Break, our students were extremely busy composing and creating gifts of love and encouragement for our congregational Shut-Ins and Prime Timers, as well as frontline workers at two local hospitals. My heart melts every time that I receive a hand written "thank you" note or email from these precious older congregational members as they express their appreciation for the gifts left on their porches or at assisted living facilities.

In addition, both Providence Southfield and Detroit Sinai Grace sent very kind words of appreciation for the 220 meals and cards that we were able to deliver on December 23.

The heartbeat of our school is to equip our young disciples to share Jesus with others as often as they can, and God truly blessed their efforts during both of these activities.

Sports Update

As you may be aware, the Michigan MDHHS has decided to extend the current restrictions on group gatherings until at least January 15th. This means that there will be no basketball practices until January 18th at the soonest.

Our school is working with other schools in our league to determine how this might affect scheduling for future games, and we will keep you up to date on these developments as they occur.

Please contact Mr. Topel at: [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

SAVE THE DATE!
National Lutheran Schools Week
January 25 - 31, 2021
Christ Belongs in School!
With everything currently transpiring in our country, if there ever was a time for Christian education, it's now... and at St. Matthew Lutheran School, we believe that Christ belongs in school!

During the week of January 25 - 31, St. Matthew Lutheran School will join over 2,100 Lutheran Schools around the United States to celebrate "National Lutheran Schools Week"! During this enjoyable week of school spirit, we want to celebrate and give thanks for the gift of Christian education. Due to the pandemic, we will be required to do things a little differently (such as outdoor events and assemblies being live streamed into classrooms), but our celebration will still focus on glorifying God!

Stay tuned for more details from our Student Council in the weeks ahead and some of the events that we hope to do... please start praying for snow!
