Day 36: Finding Socks with a Conscience in India
Destination:
India
The Republic of India is located in South Asia. It is the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. The weather in India varies greatly from a tropical monsoon climate in the south to a temperate climate in the north.
Fun Facts:
The name 'India' is derived from the river Indus. It is a valley around which people settled in earlier times.
Also: Takshila, the first university in the world started around 700 BC in India.
Art Form: Socks with a Mission
Every time you pull on your socks, you can inspire others to make conscious decisions about the impact of their purchases. You can provide real change to people around the world and encourage others to do the same. For every pair of Conscious Step socks you purchase, a donation goes directly to a Conscious Sock non-profit partner.
Conscious Step socks are organic and vegan. They are not treated with herbicides, insecticides, or pesticides, they are not genetically modified, and they are Fair Trade Certified.
The cotton growing and sock manufacturing occurs in several locations in India. Manufacturing there allows Conscious Step to benefit from India's organic cotton expertise (growing 80% of the world's organic cotton) and to support small cotton farmers.

Ordinary purchase. Extraordinary purpose. - Conscious Step |
. . .and some of the non-profit partners benefiting from the sale of Conscious Steps socks:
Socks that Give Books - Over 750 million people are illiterate, two thirds of which are women and girls. Knowing how to read makes people safer, healthier and more self-sufficient. To achieve gender equality, we need to educate our women and children. Socks that Give Books donate $1 for each pair sold to Room to Read's children literacy programs. Check out our Socks that Give Books here.
Socks that Give Trees - Trees not only provide food for families, they also provide income, empowerment, unity, leadership, education and even save lives.
Purchasing one pair of socks plants 10 trees in Uganda through Trees for the Future. Check out our Socks that Give Trees here.
Socks that Feed Children - Some children, like little Peter above, need special therapeutic milk to recover from acute malnutrition. Nowadays Peter has new-found-energy and can't stop running around. Purchasing one pair of these socks gives 3 therapeutic food packs to children through Action Against Hunger. Check out our Socks that Feed Children here.
Socks that Build Homes - Families around the world are constantly fighting for a place to live, caught in cycles of unpredictable rent increases, overcrowded conditions, or lack of access to affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. They envision a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Conscious Step donates $1 to Habitat for Humanity for each pair of Socks that Build Homes. Check out our Socks that Build Homes here.
There are many more partnerships with nonprofit organizations. See all of our current Conscious Step socks here.
The Company: Conscious Step Socks
Conscious Step was launched in 2013 by three social entrepreneurs through a crowdfunding campaign. Prashant Mehta, with friends and fellow University of New South Wales graduates Hassan Ahmed and Adam Long, founded Conscious Step to help improve lives in developing countries.
They believe global change happens when passionate people unite around a common cause.
"We believe that we have a responsibility to create clothing that makes you feel good about what you wear. It's more than how it looks, feels and lasts, but knowing that its creation didn't happen at the expense of people and planet".
Their mission is to do good with each pair of their meticulously-crafted, organic cotton socks.
"In today's world giving back is as much a lifestyle choice as it is about directly serving people and planet. Consumers now have an easier time than ever understanding how their purchase decisions affect their mind and body, as well as the surrounding world," said Prashant Mehta, CEO of Conscious Step.
How are they doing? Fabulous!
Put your best foot forward . . .
One person. One heart. One purchase. One purpose.
One idea can change the world.

I got to spend some time in our garden yesterday, pulling weeds, trimming here and there, laying down more mulch. It became clear very quickly that, even though it had seemed that we've had some rain off and on, everything from my lovingly planted spring flowers and herbs to my hardy 2 feet tall mint really needed water. Leaves were limp and the weight of flowers on some were causing plants to wilt to one side. I debated between hoping the rain would come and starting to water them myself. Thankfully both happened and this morning plants are standing taller and leaves feel firm and look invigorated. I thought of the amazing power of water again as I wrote about the Conscious Step socks that "Give Water" through water.org and the importance of water in sustaining life and health. I love it when small awareness connections creep into my day. May something in your day touch you in a new way too. Happy Tuesday!
