Student Spotlight - Gagandeep Singh Shergill
Hello Raiders! I'm Gagandeep Singh Shergill from India. In the words of the guardian of my nation, "Be the change you want to see in the society," taking the liberty of a slightly modified application of it in my life, I am striving to build a life for myself where I get to have the control and clarity aligned with my life goals that I wish to achieve. Getting into the MS Pharmacology program at Boonshoft School of Medicine has been a significant step towards my expected reach in life.

I've always felt that there's a lot more I could do in this measured period that I was provided with to pursue my study. I have acted to achieve likewise by participating in talent search competitions, numerous government-affiliated training, and aptitude tests. I was the part of my school team that won the 1st Position in the NASA AMES Space Settlement Design Contest a few years back, Project – Acropolis. I am also a National Talent Search Examination scholar, one of India's oldest and prestigious exams. To make the best of my free time in summer, I am in the process of writing review papers on various intriguing topics such as TGF beta- SMAD pathway, CaMKII protein, cardiac mitoproteins. While, I've already published review articles on intriguing topics such as NRF2, SERCA protein's potential role as a therapeutic target in cardiovascular disorders. I've tried to harness most of my skills throughout my graduation period by currently attending advanced national level examination courses like computer-aided drug discovery, Drug delivery Engineering, Immunology, and Protein Chemistry. These courses are helping me to speculate out of the box; soon, I will become competent to correlate this knowledge with my present undertakings through my WSU elite program.

At WSU, I can see all my dreams turning into reality. The ultimate exposure that I was looking for can be fulfilled here (especially clinic time at Pharmacology Translation Unit next spring in Wright State Physicians building) by developing clinical research skills and experience to translate my knowledge base into exercise. This elite program at your university will mold me to become a better scientist in the future.

OPT Application 2021
Spring OPT application process is now open. You can access and complete all required documents for the OPT application.

If you are an international student graduating in the Summer 2021 semester, you will put 07/29 as your graduation date.

You may start applying for OPT after 04/30, 2021. The latest date your application can be received by USCIS will be 09/27/2021.

Choose an OPT start date between 07/30/2021 and 09/27/2021.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have any reservations regarding graduation for Spring 2021 semester, please do not apply for OPT until after semester end grades have been posted.
How can I apply for an OPT I-20 and where can I obtain it since the UCIE office is closed?
Although the campus is temporarily closed, OPT applications are still being processed daily. Please scan and email the application with department approval to fei.yu@wright.edu. After it is processed, we will mail the I-20 to you.

Maintaining status on OPT is still the same as usual
You are permitted only 90 days of unemployment between the start and end dates on your EAD card. In addition, you are required to report the following information through the SEVP Portal while on OPT within 10 days from the change:

1. When you start a new job.
2. When you change addresses.
3. Periods of unemployment.
4. 6-month validation (You can email fei.yu@wright.edu after you update your employment information and residential address through SEVP Portal)

Can I travel back to my home country during OPT period?
Please be aware that if you are unemployed for more than 90 days, you will lose your OPT status. Also, during this uncertain time, we do not suggest international travel as there is no guarantee of open borders.
Flywire Payments
How to pay your tuition and
fees to WSU

You can easily pay your tuition and fees online via Flywire, our preferred payment partner. Flywire provides a secure global payment network that simplifies paying your fees from your home country and countries around the world. Payment options can include bank transfers, credit cards, e-wallets and more, typically in your home currency for most countries.
Health Insurance
WSU is offering a new health insurance this year! The insurance is through Anthem and it is cheaper than before and it includes dental insurance for the student.

Please be advised that you will not be able to add dependents on your medical insurance. This is a change from previous years. You will, however, be able to add your dependents on your voluntary dental and vision insurance.
Health Insurance Waiver
Do you qualify for an insurance waiver?

It is mandatory for international students (F1/J1) to have insurance coverage while being a student at WSU. All students MUST keep the Wright State insurance unless you are:

  • A sponsored student & have a financial guarantee for Fall 2021.
  • Covered by spouse’s health insurance.
  • Covered by employer’s health insurance.
  • Covered by parent’s health insurance.
  •  You are taking classes abroad for Fall

***Insurances above must be US based and not a travel/international insurance***

You must be able to submit documentation along with your request.

Deadline to waive is September 3, 2021
Dental Plan
Dental coverage is now included in the new WSU Health Insurance!

Students enrolled in the medical plan automatically enrolled in the dental.

You'll save money when you visit a dentist in your plan network because Anthem and the dentist have agreed on pricing for covered services. Dentists who are not in your plan network have not agreed to pricing, and may bill you for the difference between what Anthem pays them and what the dentist usually charges.
