Participants will be asked to wear a mask; the session should take less than an hour. PRESIDING BISHOP TO DELIVER SUNDAY'S SERMON
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton was reelected to serve a second six-year term as ELCA presiding bishop at the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Eaton is the ELCA’s fourth presiding bishop and was first elected at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

Eaton earned a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the College of Wooster.

Eaton was ordained in 1981 and served three different congregations in Ohio before being elected bishop of the ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod in 2006. She was reelected synod bishop in May 2013, shortly before her election as ELCA presiding bishop.

Eaton’s four emphases for the ELCA are: We are church; We are Lutheran; We are church together; We are church for the sake of the world. These four emphases are fundamental to identifying who the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is.

SUPPORT THE RONALD MACDONALD HOUSE
While Messiah’s members cannot prepare first Monday dinner for the families at the Ronald MacDonald House, we would like you to consider making a monetary donation instead. Through these trying times the house is providing three meals per day for each of the families. Because of the Corona virus quarantine and the fragile health of the patients, the parents are unable to leave the hospital campus.

Our congregation has been very generous donating food supplies as well as money for many years. They have recognized our church as one of their heroes through these trying times.

Make checks out the Ronald MacDonald House of the Coastal Empire. And send them either to the church or to the house at:
Ronald MacDonald House
4710 Waters Avenue
Savannah GA 31404

Thank you for your generosity!

BY HEART–THE SMALL CATECHISM VIA ZOOM
Pastor Talsness is interested in conducting a weekly class using the resource By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther . Each week, participants will discuss a different aspect of the faith through the lens of the gem that is Luther's Small Catechism. Each session will have a theme, such as the 10 Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, or the Apostle's Creed. Because the class is a "conversation", this class is well-suited for Zoom, where we can gather online.

Pastor Talsness hosted this class in June and it was well-received by those participants, who are welcome to come back. Whether you are new to the faith or one who needs a refresher on the basics, this is rewarding exploration. We need six participants to make this class happen. Those who are interested are welcome to invite friends or family who live in different parts of the country.

Although not essential, the book is a recommended companion for the class. It is informative, with manageable chapters to read each week. You can order the book here:   https://www.amazon.com/Heart-Conversations-Martin-Luthers-Catechism/dp/1506431488 .

Gatherings will take place on Thursday afternoons or at another time that works for the group. Contact Pastor Talsness if you are interested, with sessions beginning Thursday, June 4th.
NEXT MESSIAH BOOK CLUB - AMERICAN DIRT
The Messiah Lutheran book club will meet Tuesday, June 9 th  at Sunset Park at 6:00 pm, observing social distancing but discussing the book American Dirt  by Jeanine Cummins. All are welcome to attend.   American Dirt  tells the story of Lydia Quixano Pérez, a middle-class Mexican bookseller who flees Acapulco with 8-year-old son, Luca, after a drug cartel violently attacks a quinceañera she's attending, killing her journalist husband who earlier had profiled the cartel leader, Javier.
THE BANANAS WILL RETURN
We have recently been informed that the Savannah Bananas will commence their season on July 1st. Social distancing will be enforced at the game. As a result, we will only receive about one-half of our requested allotment of tickets– which means we only have about 20 tickets available for our group.

The game will be played on Thursday, July 9 th , against the Macon Bacon. Tickets are $18 and include cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, soda, water and cookies.

Since we have a limited number of tickets, they will be available on a first come, first served basis. If you wish to watch the Bananas fry Macon's Bacon, then you can reserve your tickets by emailing Barry Jones at ljones6794@aol.com . Please include your name and the number of tickets you wish to purchase. Please limit the number of tickets requested to enable as many families as possible to attend.

SERMON PREVIEW FOR JUNE 7
Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, in the gospel from Matthew 28, Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith. Questions for reflection: When was the last time you thought about the trinity? In what ways is describing the trinity as a "mystery" helpful? Unhelpful? Some people say, "three is a magic number", do you agree? Why or why not?
