Marketing & Membership
Happy New Year 2021 to all of our Members and Guests
I can't believe it's already been one year since I started at SMCC. I must say it has been nothing short of an amazing year, considering Two-Months after I started the Nation let alone the World was facing a Pandemic crisis. Through it all Sugar Mill Country Club Board Members, Team Members & Club Members stuck together and showed me how resilient our Club can really be when times are at there hardest.
With that being said, we closed the year of 2020 out with a total of 48 New Memberships, Two-6 month Previews and 7 New Winter Previews starting in January of 2021. With a year of rare unknowns, our Marketing & Membership efforts have proven to prevail, regardless of where the rest of the clubs in the State stand or even in the Nation, the " Sugar Mill Country Club - Bubble " is like no other and we are moving full steam ahead into 2021.

One of the largest initiatives of the 2020 year was the Re-design and Launch of our New Sugar Mill Country Club website. This site not only has brought Sugar Mill CC to the top of search categories in the Golf & Private Club industry on the world wide web but our new website is now a true representation of the great beauty and high-end quality of what Sugar Mill CC has to offer as a Private Club in East Central Florida.

Another major initiative was re-branding and bringing our Newsletter back to life, I can successfully say we have done that and the continued positive feedback from the Members is most appreciated and we will strive to make it bigger and better each month.

In 2020 Marketing and Membership in connection with Clubhouse operations coordinated some new events like our New Member Mingles & Summer Family Pool Days. In an effort to build a stronger ties with the Community of Sugar Mill HOA Residents we've hosted two wonderfully attended events, Trunk or Treat Golf Cart Decorating contest & Christmas Golf Cart Parade and contest. Both of these events were well attended and most enjoyed by members of all ages who reside in the community and are part of the club.

In 2020 the Membership and Marketing Department added on Team Member, Emi Newman as the new Member Relations Coordinator, Emi is working hard on her Masters in Hospitality Management at UCF and is beyond excited for this new opportunity with our Club and to be helping our Members with any and all Customer Service needs.

The Club has also added more amenities to the Activity Center to bring a higher level of services to our Club for all Members to benefit and enjoy. Starting with our newly renovated Spa Treatment Room, the club now has a Multi-Purpose treatment room with services from local experts in the Industry of Physical Therapy by Professional Physical Therapy Associates, Medical Spa Services by The MedSpa NSB, and Massage Therapy by Abundant Day Spa. Stay on the look out for special Spa Treatment Parties and Wine Down events coming soon in the first quarter.

The Activity Room Class schedule has been modified, with now Two different Yoga Instructors who will bring different styles of yoga practices to the club. M/W/F at 9:30 am - Angie Forest a long time instructor at the club will continue teaching Yoga and our Newest addition - Tuesday's at 9:30 am we'll have Andrea Beck of Kula Yoga.

Starting in 2021 we have a new community healthcare partnership beginning with Halifax Health, they will be bringing our Membership monthly Healthcare Lectures - with area leading experts from Halifax Health & UF Health to speak about new innovations in Health Care & ways to keep our Members Healthy, Happy & Living their Life well. This lecture series will be every 3rd Wednesday of the month in the afternoon.

As we move into the 2021 new year Marketing & Membership will be working diligently to identify new, different, fun, and informative activities/events, to bring all of our Members & Guests the best Private Club experience.

Thank you for being so gracious and welcoming my first year at Sugar Mill Country Club, I look forward to many more successful years serving the club and its' members.

Sincerely
Samira (Sam) Mirzai-Smith
Director of Marketing and Membership
News from our Director of F & B

Food & Beverage
We recently released updated menus for both the Sunset Lounge and the Main Dining Room. To date the feedback has been very positive. It was evident through the November survey we needed to clean up the consistency and get back to a larger, more diverse menu. We came out of lock down to takeout only, focusing on a price driven comfort food menu to encourage members to find value and usage in a clubhouse they were not able to utilize from March to April. In early May were we allowed to enjoy seeing members dine in the club once again, though limited to 25% occupancy. Unsure of how many would feel safe dining in the club, we published a paired down menu and focused on keeping the clubhouse, members, and staff as safe and healthy as possible.
Dining usage has continued to see rises and falls in demand as frequently as the pandemic numbers rise and fall as reported by the news. Your feedback is important to steering the decisions that impact the menu items, services, hours, takeout containers and all the other little things that go into your experiences at the club. As before, you need not wait for a survey to share your thoughts.

We are looking forward to making some additional changes in the 2021 new year. We will experiment with later hours of operation in the Sunset Lounge. Starting early in January we will serve dinner until 9:00pm on Friday and Saturday(Then over the next few months we will analyze usage and traffic patterns and evaluate the best course of action moving forward.) Other new menus are in the process, long overdue updates to the Sunrise Grille/Snack Bar Menu are coming. An updated specialty drink menu in the SSL may be unveiled before the newsletter is published.

In other operational news, we will be closing the clubhouse the first Monday of every month for cleaning and maintenance. Chemical applications, shampooing carpets, cleaning vents, air ducts, and HVAC, all with member and staff safety as a top priority. These items are by design very difficult to accomplish with members in the building and, in the long run, to help keep the members healthy and keep the club’s aging infrastructure from deterioration.

The staff once again would like to thank the Membership for their support through the Employee Relief Fund and Christmas Fund. These programs made a world of difference for so many this year.

We will continue to work hard while we navigate these unusual times, and you can be assured that providing you, our members, a safe place, a fun environment, and a great dining experience is of paramount importance to our team.

In your service,
Ben Deininger

Golf Course Care

Across the country, golf has had a resurgence in popularity prompted by an unusual 2020. Sugar Mill is no different as rounds of golf exceeded 2019 by 4,000. This is one of the positives that has emerged from the pandemic of 2020.

With this increase of traffic on the course, it is extra important to be diligent in the etiquette of course care that is expected of a golfer.
Increased traffic along with single riders in carts does create additional wear and tear on the golf course. Here some basic reminders as you enjoy your round.

Fairways
·        Fill your divots with the complimentary sand provided and smooth level to the ground. If you run out don’t fret, refill stations are conveniently placed throughout all 27 holes.
·        Drive your cart away from worn areas that are visible with the increased cart traffic.

Greens
·        Repair your ball marks plus 1 additional one.
·        Have all four tires on the cart paths that are provided around the greens.

Bunkers
·        Rake the area of the bunker that has been disturbed as if you had to play a shot from that position.
·        Be sure to knock the sand off the bottom of your shoes after you leave the bunker and before you walk on the green.

Nothing new above, but does make a difference if everyone is doing their part as a golfer. The saying rings true that “It takes a Village”.

Sincerely,
Derek Morrison

SMCC Members,

Tennis/Pickleball Newsletter

 Good day all,

Another great event was had on 14 December, our first installment of pizza parties with Tennis and Pickleball play. We had all the courts full again and people waiting to rotate on ALL the courts. Everyone had a great time! We are keeping everything socially distanced so that we keep everyone safe. Thank you to the beverage cart to help us have fun.

A few administration notes to add....

 1. We would like to welcome Jeff Tyrrel for joining us as the Pickleball Coordinator. I would also like to thank Kathy Preston for helping to organize emails so we can get the pickleball players in our Signup Genius as we are working on gaining more members. When I am out in about in town, I always stress how much we have played during this pandemic and this is bringing outsiders to Sugar Mill.

 2. We could use someone to help us take pictures during our socials. If you are interested please reach out to myself or Steve Schwartz.

 3. Please save the dates below on our future events. We are sticking with pizza and not pot luck in an effort to keeps viral spread at a minimum. If you have an idea on other food options please reach out to myself or Steve.

Save the date events:

Monday - February 22, 2021 3:30pm - 6 pm Pizza and Round Robin Play

Monday - March 22, 2021 3:30pm - 6pm Pizza and Round Robin Play

Saturday - April 24 2021 3:30pm - Round Robin Play and CLOSING dinner

One other special event coming to the courts on March 10, 2021 with be the Tennis & Pickleball Tournament Cancer Fundraiser. This is the first time that Tennis & Pickleball have joined the Annual Cancer Fundraiser and we are hoping we can take a Swing at Cancer and get this event off to a great start. We have many things planned from a Bloody Mary/Mimosa Bar to raffles and reserved seats. If you are interested in sponsoring our event please reach out to me.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the courts!

thank you

Sugar Mill an “Activities Hub”: 20 Minutes to Fun!
by Mike Schmidt (SMCC Member )
" ARCHERY"
As I said in previous months’ Activities Hub articles in the Sugar Mill Newsletter, there’s a lot to do close-by; a lot of fun to be had if you know about it. Golf was last month’s topic; and Archery (really?) is the one for this month. Read on...

I was the only kid in the neighborhood who wasn’t allowed to have a “Real Gun”: in my father’s opinion that even included a Red Ryder BB gun. (More about the whys of that decision will come later in a Newsletter). Because of that, I and my buddies reverted to a more primitive form of weaponry- play...Archery. My parents thought that was, if I remember right: “Safe and Just fine.”. We made our bows from saplings we cut from our neighbor’s small trees (finally a confession) and the arrows from his hedge, as straight as we could find them. We sharpened the arrows with a Boy Scout knife and then further sharpened them to a very fine point with one of those little plastic pencil sharpeners. Clearly this all was “safer” than a BB gun!

We had great fun shooting things, in fact, almost everything whether it was moving or not: trees, bushes, my mother’s flowers, the garage east-side window, and at times (of course) each other. (Note: I still feel sort of guilty about skinning one off of the back of Bobby Gears’ head; but, the bleeding stopped on its own pretty quickly and I heard he became a lawyer in later life, so not too much permanent damage, I guess).  Anyway, back to the story...

When I took up archery as an adult, I left behind the stick bows and bought a state-of-the-art “compound bow”: metal limbs + cables + pulley systems + cams + lazar sights + stabilizers + a trigger release. The Abyssinians would have been proud to see how far we’ve come. But after a while, I found this too mechanical and not “natural”; the boyhood fun of just shooting a bow wasn’t there. So I went back to stick bows, but now much more sophisticated and VERY beautiful: a long bow and a recurve....50-60# pull weight..capable of shooting long and flat. Recently, at “this age”, I’ve dropped down to 35# pull weights, and no one seems to care. Hmmmmm... Now I shoot a nice Bob Lee laminated Black Abbyss recurve and, just new, a Mongolian Horse Bow from Kazakhstan.
                    Wow...who would have thought...a Mongolian Horse Bow...what?

(Right now someone is saying, “But you can’t shoot both at once, so why do you need two?” “Need”...? Hey....come on!)

And as long as we’re buying stuff, Northwest Archery will hand-make arrows to your bow’s specifications: all cedar with natural feather fletchings and multicolored striping on the shaft. Very cool, and a lot straighter than the ones I made from the hedges. And, boy, do they fly fast and straight!

Everything I’ve mentioned to equip you for archery is available either on-line or at nearby sports stores like Dicks. Plus, there’s a big archery-focused center in Orlando that carries everything one would need, and has an indoor range and certified instructors.

So where, within 20 minutes of the “Sugar Mill Activities Hub”, is a place to be all alone in the forest with your bow in hand and stalking stuff? First, is Spruce Creek park, right off of Pioneer Trail and then left on Martins Dairy Road to the end. I think it’s not right to shoot in the park proper, so I go off into the adjacent woods and shoot stumps and hillocks: bushwhacking, in fact.

But for the real deal, it’s the Daytona Archers’ Club just off of Bellevue Road, in a big woods near the airport runways. The membership is $75/year: all the shooting you want and whenever you want to do it.

P.S. Next month will be “Biking from the Sugar Mill Hub”

SLOW COOKER WINTER VEGETABLE SOUP WITH SPLIT RED LENTILS
by Members Choice
INGREDIENTS
  •  2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  •  1 large yellow onion, diced
  •  3 celery stalks, diced
  •  3 medium carrots, trimmed, peeled, and diced
  •  2 medium zucchini, ends trimmed and chopped into 3/4-inch chunks
  •  3 Yukon gold potatoes, scrubbed and chopped into 3/4-inch cubes
  •  3/4 cup split red lentils
  •  1 cup canned chopped tomatoes (with their juices)
  •  2 pieces of parmigiano-reggiano rind
  •  2 dried bay leaves
  •  3-4 sprigs of fresh thyme
  •  5 cups chicken stock
  •  1 teaspoon kosher sea salt, plus more
  •  freshly ground black pepper
  •  2-3 cups finely sliced savoy cabbage, reserved for later
  •  extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  •  freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley (or basil), for garnishing
  •  freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese, for garnishing

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. If you own a stovetop-safe slow cooker insert: Heat the olive oil in the insert over medium heat on the stove. Add the onion and celery and saute until tender, 5 to 7 minutes, before transferring to the slow cooker and continuing with the instructions below.
  2. If you do not own a slow cooker with a stovetop-safe insert (or wish to skip step one): Place the insert on the slow-cooker base (this recipe will fit a 4-quart capacity slow cooker). Add the olive oil, onion, celery, carrot, zucchini, potatoes, split red lentils, chopped tomatoes, parmigiano rind, bay leaves, thyme, chicken stock, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir together. Cook on high heat for 4-6 hours, or until the red lentils are tender (or alternatively, cook on low heat for 8-10 hours).
  3. In the last hour of cook time (or 2 hours, if you are cooking over low heat), add the thinly sliced cabbage. Remove and discard the dried bay leaves and any tough thyme sprigs. Adjust the seasoning to taste salt and pepper – you will most likely need to be liberal on the salt for this soup!
  4. Serve the soup and top each serving with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a sprinkling of freshly chopped parsley, and freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano.
