|
Children had a special place in the ministry of Jesus, who had an openness to ministering to children. Matthew tells us that when the austere disciples wanted to keep children away from him (Matthew 19:13-15), Jesus said they should allow the children to get close to him, because the kingdom of God belongs to children.
In another place Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). Then he expands on what kind of change he wants in people before they can “enter the kingdom.” “Whoever becomes humble like this child, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
And twice in the gospels Jesus said that people who welcome children, welcome Jesus (Matthew 18:6; Mark 9:37).
It seems that Jesus was not really interested in important people, or people who think they were important. We find Jesus often with those who were rejected by society – with the sinners, tax collectors, people who knew how needy they were and who had no standing in society.
Children in our society are mostly treated differently, tolerated in “adult company” and with a much higher status. Yet, the presence of children among us is not only about the wonder, delight and innocence they embody, but the fact that they invite followers of Jesus to resist power and privilege, especially in the church. And above all, to be humble in serving.

researching and learning about youth culture, training leaders, inspiring parents, and cultivating the church's imagination about how to reach a younger generation for Christ.

In preparation for the Growing Young Weekend (Oct. 8-10) we will be holding 2 Sunday morning classes on the Growing Young book. Join us as we dive into the 6 strategies that help a church be a healthy, welcoming, and thriving spiritual home for young people.

Life Together Adult Class
Wednesdays, 6:00PM-7:30PM, Chapel
How can we grow closer to God and become more like Jesus? The Bible indicates that this is always done in a community of disciples. On Wednesday evenings, Pastor Scott will help us explore how we can do “Life Together” in our spiritual disciplines, and how doing them together will help us grow as individuals. This will be a 12-week course on the spiritual disciplines practiced in community. It will also look at some non-traditional disciplines that have been overlooked at times, such as Sabbath keeping and practicing forgiveness, reconciliation and justice.

In this second of six Dunamis Conferences, you will look at what Scripture teaches about how God’s Spirit calls us to cooperate with him, becoming people who change the world for the glory of Jesus Christ. The teaching will be onsite at the Columbia Presbyterian Church. Also included is a hosted, onsite contemplative prayer walk.

High School Back to School Retreat
Saturday, Nov. 6, 10:00AM-3:00PM. $35.

Children's Sunday School for Fall 2021
- For now, Sunday school for ages Kindergarten - 5th will be at the 9:00AM service only.
- Sunday school for Preschool will be offered at both the 9:00AM & 10:30AM services.
- Nursery care for 0-2 years will be offered at both the 9:00AM & 10:30AM services.
- Children will begin in the worship service and will be dismissed to Sunday school following the children's message. Children needing nursery care may be checked in at any time.

Compassion Vancouver Clinic

Compassion Vancouver has reflected over the past year on the best way to provide medical/dental clinics in Vancouver and Clark County. They have decided to go from one big clinic a year to several smaller medical/dental clinics. Compassion Vancouver's plan is 2-3 clinics per year, at several different churches. Smaller clinics are easier to plan, require fewer volunteers, and are much less expensive.
