Final Call: R6-SCPHTC Needs Assessment
The deadline to complete Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center's needs assessment is Friday, April 19, 2019 . Your input will directly help us create and provide relevant free online training resources for healthcare and public health practitioners.

Please complete the brief online survey accessed at the below link geared specifically towards public health workforce training needs. The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete and your responses will not be linked with your name or other identifying information. 

Texas Health Institute Selected to Lead Regional Efforts to Enhance Ongoing Disaster-Related Health Recovery through
Training and Technical Assistance 
Hurricane Response Hub to Provide Training and Technical Assistance to Health Departments, Emergency Management, and Community-Based Organizations in Texas 

Texas Health Institute has been chosen to serve as one of five regional technical assistance centers for the Hurricane Response Hub (HRH) initiative led by the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI ). Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) , this national program is designed to enhance disaster-related surveillance and environmental and occupational health recovery efforts in areas impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria by building disaster-related public health workforce capacity. 

Working with a range of state and regional partners including Harris County Public Health, Texas A&M University School of Public Health, and Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Texas Health Institute will serve as the coordinating body within Texas to lead public health workforce capacity building activities in disaster-related surveillance, environmental, and occupational health needs. 

The training and resources developed through this initiative will help health departments, public health institutes, emergency management, law enforcement, health care providers, government entities, and other organizations build workforce capacity and institutional knowledge that improves disaster-related recovery in the future.

Public Health professionals, we need your help! The Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center is seeking pilot testers to help evaluate four new Tribal Behavioral Health courses.

Courses will take users about an hour to complete.
Course titles are listed below:

  • TBH 101 - Overview of American Indian/Alaska Native Behavioral Health
  • TBH 102 - Health Issues for American Indian/Alaska Native Men
  • TBH 103 - The Opioid Epidemic and American Indian/Alaska Native Communities
  • TBH 104 - Culture is Prevention

Transgender Health 105 reviews endocrinology for transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex individuals with a focus on hormone replacement therapy.

After completing this course,
users will be able to:

  • Contrast the benefits of hormone therapy for transgender patients with and without gender dysphoria
  • Differentiate between feminizing hormone therapy and masculinizing hormone therapy
  • Distinguish specific preventive medicine services needed when undergoing hormone therapy
  • Recognize the steps necessary to initiate hormone therapy
  • Summarize insurance and out of pocket methods of payment for hormone replacement therapy

  Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series (SWPI)

The Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series (SWPI) helps health department programs strengthen services to people that use wells, cisterns, springs, and other private drinking water systems not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Oversight for these systems vary, but core elements of successful, sustainable programs are similar. SWPI walks through the 10 Essential Environmental Public Health Services and the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards, and provides examples of using them to identify and fill program gaps in these types of drinking water programs.
