RESTORE REOPENS TO THE PUBLIC
From our Executive Director
Making Adjustments, Continuing to Serve, Seeing the Light

Our annual gala was postponed from March 28th to May 29th and will now be offered as a virtual event with to-go dining from Pinehurst Country Club. Even those who do not purchase tickets to the event can participate in the silent auction which is already online at www.habitatgala.org . Tickets for the event will directly support our next build in Moore County and can be purchased online or by contacting the Habitat office at 295-1934. We are looking forward to bringing our guests some fun surprises that evening to help us all remember what this evening makes possible – an entire home for a local family in need willing to earn the opportunity to build their future!

The importance of a safe and affordable home has never been more evident than now. Although we haven’t been able to operate in our traditional way for the past 6 weeks, our Habitat team has been making adjustments to allow us to continue serving our current and future homeowners during this crisis. Our staff construction team has been working full tilt to complete 4 homes that were underway in mid-March. Two of them were sold on April 30 th to homeowners, with plans to sell the other two in June. We held our first “Virtual Dedication” on Facebook live on April 28 th with homeowner, Alicia McCoy. Alicia works at FirstHealth in the Emergency Room – we are thrilled to know our mission supports so many of our local employees on the front line of this crisis. Please take a moment to watch our dedication.
We have enjoyed taking this extra time to check in with some of our homeowners who have paid off their mortgages, too. Since we’ve been building for 32 years, we have several each year who are doing so, and their stories and gratitude for their homes is a great reminder that although Habitat is not an emergency response organization, a good home is very much appreciated during any crisis – and we are proud to have provided good homes to over 275 families in the Sandhills.
Our Habitat team thanks you for all your support, emails, phone calls, and letters. We miss our volunteers and want to see you back as soon as possible. Our priority continues to be keeping our volunteers, homeowners, and staff as safe as possible while following state and CDC recommendations.

We have made changes in the ReStore that will allow shoppers to maintained a safe distance. We will be operating with clear shopping guidelines for one-directional routes, donation drop off & pick up processes, hourly cleaning procedures, and more

Wishing you health and hope!

Build Site Opens June 2nd
We are excited to report that our plans are to start bringing back our construction volunteers on Tuesday, June 2! Our hardcore volunteers, will be our very first folks back to building. Groups are limited to (7) people per house. We have purchased additional safety materials and will be implementing the new procedures to ensure everyone’s safety:

  1. Sites will be limited to seven volunteers per site (house) with two supervisors per site
  2. We anticipate June, July and August will be on Alan Charles Way because there are two sites. We can have up to 14 volunteers per shift.
  3. Each site supervisor will ensure all tools and equipment are disinfected throughout the day
  4. We ask that volunteers practice social distancing maintaining at least a six-foot distances
  5. We will be unable to provide snacks in the foreseeable future but recommend each volunteer bring their own snacks and water, if possible. Additional water will be available.
  6. To keep cost down and maintain safety precautions we ask that you bring your own eye protection, gloves and mask if you prefer to wear one. We can provide new eye wear and gloves for volunteers who need it, but will ask them to take them home after the work day and bring back for future volunteering
  7. We will provide extended build days on Saturdays, if needed, to accommodate additional weekend volunteers. Volunteers may choose to build for a morning or afternoon shift (when available) or entire day
  8. Our team has built hand-washing stations for each site complete with soap and running water
  9. We will be providing temperature checks for all volunteers as needed and ask that you not join us on the site if you have been ill, running a fever or exposed to someone ill.
We are eager to welcome our customers back to the Restore on Tuesday, June 2nd in Moore County and on Wednesday, June 3rd in Richmond County.

In early May, we began accepting self-service donation drop off at our Moore County ReStore. Currently we have over threes trucks and a shipping container full of merchandise which will be scrubbed and sanitized before it goes out on the floor. We will be overflowing so be sure to to stop by and see what bargains your can claim!

Our ReStore staff is back in staggered shifts to minimize contact and make several changes in our Aberdeen ReStore. There has been a lot of painting, cleaning and building happening. Staff has been working with the construction team to create new check out counters which will decrease the waiting line and the flow of traffic. Directional signage has been added to keep the flow of shoppers going one way and plexi-glass installed to keep everyone safe. We have been busy sanitizing inventory and surfaces to make sure you are comfortable while you are shopping.

Winston & Para Young in Taylortown Roof Repair
Most recent repair success story.

Mr. Winston Young is a 79 yr old Air Force veteran who applied for repair support in early February of this year. His wife, Para, and he are living in their camper on site while he continues to refurbish their home. Roof replacement was their biggest project, which Habitat provided, and their hope to move in once their kitchen is finished. Both are happy with Habitat’s support and the great job performed by Elite roofing.
