Earth Week
Earth Week continues today with our free shade tree giveaway at Ludovici Park from 8 am - 11 am. Our festivities began last week at Coral Reef Park with our Bike-B-Que, which included a nature bike ride through the Village, a canal clean-up and ceremonial tree planting in honor of our "Environmentalists of the Year" honorees. This year's winners were from Deering Estate:
Chris Bumpus, Vanessa Trujillo and Jennifer Tisthammer.
Ladybug distributions continue on Monday, and we have already delighted children at 7 area elementary schools. Mayor Cunningham and our parks and recreation department are teaching the youngsters that ladybugs provide a natural alternative to chemical pesticides.
The winner of our Palmetto Bay Earth Week Art Contest is Amelia Ovalle from Southwood Middle School. Her drawing came in first place with the theme "Protecting our Species". With Vice-Mayor John DuBois leading the ceremony, a tree was planted in her honor at Southwood Middle School on Thursday.
