Two solo exhibitions, Staccato and Enrootables, are currently on view at Boston Sculptors Gallery through May 5. Staccato features the figurative and abstract sculptures of Claudia Olds Goldie. Each work is linked by their patterned surfaces, made of graphite pencil drawings on white ceramic clay. These drawings create textile designs on some sculptures and tattoos on others. Staccato is named after for the huge, 84-part wall sculpture that makes the focal point of the exhibition. The varied marks suggest the varied interpretations that the viewer can have about the work. Enrootables features the work of Leslie Wilcox, an artist inspired by the "wood wide web;" the underground social network of trees by which they share information between generations. Wilcox wraps deadwood from the sea in metal screening, creating skeletal forms that explore the similarities between the communicative system of trees and ourselves. There will be a closing reception for Staccato and Enrootables on Sunday, May 5 from 4–6:00 p.m. featuring music by Suzanne McDonald and Emily Hale. Life/Like: Photographs by Martine Gutierrez is on view at Mount Holyoke College Art Museum through June 16. This exhibition showcases Martine Gutierrez's lush yet haunting photographs, with each series exploring various themes. The series Girl Friends depicts two same-dressed women in different places and poses, but despite their intimacy, one of the women is a mannequin, challenging the viewer's perception of reality. Another series, Line Up, also uses mannequins, in this case to explore the loss of personal identity experienced by those in a group. Gutierrez has a keen interest in boundaries, particularly artificial ones, that leads her to creating her photographs. As each viewer of Life/Like contends with their reality being challenged, they may find their own boundaries being challenged as well. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is showing Bouchra Khalili: Poets and Witnesses through August 25. Bouchra Khalili is a Berlin-based artist whose work bridges the gap between the resistance of the 1960s and now, utilizing the connection between poetry and activism. Her short films on view, Twenty-Two Hours and The Typographer, reflect and showcase her deep research into the Black Panther Party in New England and Jean Genet, a French poet who toured in support of the Panthers in 1970. Twenty-Two Hours retells Genet's story through performance, images, film footage and the words of former Black Panther Party member Doug Miranda. The Typographer is a short film depicting a letterpress typesetting the last sentence Genet wrote during his lifetime. In today's tumultuous political times, Poets and Witnesses reminds us of the importance of international solidarity in the continued struggle for equality.
