Directory Distribution in 2020

With COVID 19 and the closure of businesses, attractions, events and studios, we have been faced with a new challenge - the distribution of our 2020 Arts Directory and Map.
For this year, 8000 - 10,000 will be delivered with the Highlander across Haliburton County and the remainder distributed to businesses, tourist attractions and studios as they open.
Please call our office if you would like some for your location.

I have been experimenting with a Japanese wood burning technique known as Shou Sugi Ban. I'll use these pieces to make picture frames.

I have a book - a colouring book/Bible study published on Amazon ($13.93) as a print book and on Etsy as digital PDF ($5.99).

Illustrations by Anna Morgan (Haliburton). Also she and I worked on the Bible study together.

As We Find It Play Reading Group

For just over a month, the "As We Find It" Play Reading Group has  been meeting on Zoom every Wednesday evening. We started gathering to  commiserate about the postponement of Highlands Little Theatre's
spring show, Vintage Hitchcock, but the group has grown beyond that  cast. Over the last several weeks, we've revisited some old  favourites, but now we're heading into new territory and the group is  going to be helping to workshop a brand-new play, entitled "Too Much
Doubt", which takes its inspiration from an event in Haliburton's  history. Interested in joining us? Just send an email to
kbutler@haliburtonhighlandsmuseum.com . Anyone with a love of theatre is welcome!

unique password and ID about 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. Your host will admit you to
the meeting . Make sure your video and audio are turned on. You will be asked to Screen Sharing with

It is vital to send pictures as you progress with your painting at home to the host for a Photoshop
presentation ( Carole is a Graphic Designer and well trained in Photoshop.)

continue to paint on your own and at your own pace. At the beginning and end of the day all come

individual help. You may join as many sessions as you wish during this Pandemic. They will start anew

Working From Home
I would like to thank everyone who sent me material for this newsletter.  Working from home is a challenge.  I am used to the super fast internet at the Incubator.  I am spoiled working in the bright office with the greatest internet.
Lets keep in touch.

Many artists and craftspeople are looking for ways to sell their work in a safe way after many shows, markets and venues will be closed this summer.

A number of our members have already been offering no contact "porch-pick-up".  In some cases, pictures are put up on social media with customers directly contacting the artist with what they are interested in. An e-transfer is sent and the item is picked up.  Others are trying an honour-system table/display outside at their residence.

The Art's Council Haliburton Highlands would like to help you with entrepreneurship in a safe way.

Let us know what you are doing so we can share it through our newsletter, Facebook and Instagram page. Email photos or information or tag us on your social media posts so we can share.
Highlands Summer Festival

Welcome to the
Highlands Summer Festival
Photo Contest
Each month we will be posting a photo from one of the shows we presented over the past two decades. The challenge for you is to identify the show and the year it was presented. There could be additional questions as well, depending on the whims of the contest master. All you have to do is submit your answers to contest@highlandssummerfestival.on.ca by the 25th of the month. We will select one winner from all the correct entries we received by deadline. The winner will receive two tickets to any of the 2021 season shows because, YES! there will be a season next year. A new photo will be posted at the beginning of each month at which time we'll announce the winner of the previous contest.
It is as simple as that.
* No entry fee.
* No tickets to buy.
* No meetings to attend.
....just a nostalgic stroll down our theatre memory lane and a chance to score some tickets to the 2021 Highlands Summer Festival season.
So........
Let the Fun Begin!!!!

CONTEST # 1
We're looking for the name of the show, the year it was presented and the names of the three actors, (not their characters, their real names), you see here. Bonus points to anyone who can describe the relationship between the three characters.
Send your entry by June 25 to:
Watch for the winner to be announced and the next contest in this location in early July. Good Luck!!!

I just put together this video for my song 'Hometown.'

I'm creating another video featuring Napanee images with the same song.  I wonder if there are any folks in  Haliburton County who would like to share archival images of Haliburton, Minden, Canarvon etc. so I could make a Haliburton 'Hometown.'  If there were, they could contact me at  archdav@gmail.com.

I've also been giving series of themed Zoom (50-minute) concerts on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m.  The themes haves been:  Songs of the 20s, 30s and 40s; Songs of the 50s, Early Folkies, Girl Groups and Bobbys, Bob Dylan.  Next week is the British Invasion!  Anyone interested could contact me at the above email or on Facebook.

Hope you're well.  All the best,

David
p.s. concerts are free, of course

"The month of May presented some challenges for me.  I had run out of some art supplies and had to place an order online .  Unfortunately, due to COVID and the high demand of online ordering shipping would take three weeks.  To see it through, I opted to use whatever materials I had on hand.  I painted in oils, did line drawings, used ink and played with collage.  It kept me busy enough until new supplies arrived.  In turn,  it opened up new possibilities and helped me experiment.  As the lockdown extends, my studio wall is filling up."
Covid-19 The Invisible Foe
By Irene Davidson Fisher

Each one of us must do our part
To fight against this foe.
So pay attention, yes you too!
And do what you are told.

There are those who think it's all a hoax
And cause us a lot of alarm.
But we can all do our part
To keep us safe from harm.

They say to keep our distance.
They say to please stay home.
That doing this will help us all fight against this foe.

And if you sneeze
Or if you cough
Please do so in your sleeve,
And if we all can do this
We will stop the spread of this disease.

So listen up one and all and do as you are told.
Stay at home and watch TV.
Play a game or work from home.
Learn at a distance or ride your bike.
But keep your distance - six feet - Right?

And if we all do what we're asked
All the need for this will pass
And then we'll sing and then we'll laugh
And go outside again.

I have been doing portraits of my grandkids because I miss them. This is the last one.
It is with deep regret that we announce that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Haliburton School of Art + Design summer program is cancelled.
This cancellation includes the weeklong courses and Saturday workshops, from May to November, listed in the summer calendar.
Our courses are designed for small groups of people to come together to create and collaborate in intimate studio environments and, unfortunately, cancellation is the only option available to us right now. We hold the health and safety of our community as our highest priority.
We have offered summer courses in Haliburton for more than 50 years. Our love of art and passion for creativity endures. We are now working on alternative options and opportunities to offer online this summer and will have more information available here in the weeks ahead.
In the meantime, fees paid will be fully refunded.
Thank you for your interest in our school, your patience and understanding. Stay safe.
