This Good Friday is such a sharp contrast from all other special days in the Christian world. We can still see the images of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations and recall the happiness for the birth of Christ. All that joyful activity was just a few short weeks ago.
But now our more penitent season of Lent is winding down with the sad observance of Christ’s death. In
today’s readings
of Isaiah and Hebrews, the focus is on the suffering and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus as he was harassed, abused and killed. I think we need the low points like today, trimmed in purple and black, and all the grim details to make us truly appreciate the happier times. God gave us His son, who died to redeem all our sins. It was the utmost generous sacrifice. Before we start planning where we should put the chocolate eggs or select a new suit or dress, let’s focus on what it means to us to have God’s great presence in our own lives.
And in the verses by John, we hear that Jesus’ own friends and confidantes, his apostles, deserted him and failed to support him in the end. It’s always sad and discouraging to hear how Peter denied knowing Jesus in these last days of Christ’s life. We all know that it’s a lot easier to face challenges with a support system of some sort, yet Jesus had to face his accusers on his own. He was very human, very brave, and very ready to give his life for all of us. It’s important that we show our gratitude today, and every day.
