 Making Music at WMS

Is there a greater pleasure than watching young children sing their hearts out? They delight in the melodies, in recalling the lyrics and in moving to the rhythms. They perform with an enviable gusto - singing with such commitment and assurance the audience cannot help but be carried away by the pure joy of their music-making.
On Thursday, April 18, at 9:30 a.m., you are invited to the Primary Spring Concert - "Jungle Beat." The Primary students will be presenting an array of jungle-themed songs, as well as an adaptation of a familiar folktale: "Too Noisy." The students have practiced the songs and movements for months; they're excited to share all they have learned with their biggest fans.
Last summer, Joe Ambrosino, WMS music teacher, attended the Kennedy Center's eighth annual Arts Integration Conference, along with several Primary teachers. From those three days of professional development, the teachers took away countless arts integration lessons and activities to share with their students throughout the year. This year's Primary Spring Concert is partly a result of that work. Good teachers matched with strong professional development always result in classroom innovation, engaging lessons and memorable classroom experiences for students.
Last week, the Toddler families had the pleasure of participating in the Toddler Sing-Along. In May, there will be two musical theater performances featuring the 9-12 and the middle school students. The 9-12 class will mount a production of "Making the Band" and the middle school students will present an original musical, "A Rose's Curse," which they have written under the guidance and direction of Heather Wadler, the middle school music teacher.
We hope you will have a chance to attend these performances. It's springtime at WMS - a time for singing and so much more.

Auction & Gala Thank You!
A big thank you to everyone who attended last Saturday's auction and gala at WMS!
Warm spring weather capped off an incredible evening of food, fun and fundraising.
Music Through the Ages would not have been possible without so many creative and dedicated supporters.
A special thank you to the members of our auction committee for the time and enthusiasm you dedicated to making this evening a success. Thanks also to the parents, staff and supporters who helped solicit gifts, create classroom gifts, sell tickets, hang decorations, clean up and more.

The WMS Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for our members (parents and guardians of current WMS students), staff and community members to meet and hear directly from the WMS Board of Directors. It's also when members elect directors to the board.

Middle School Art Now on Display at DAIS Art Show
Stop by Tower Hill School through April 24 for the Delaware Association of Independent Schools (DAIS) Art Show, which showcases artwork by some of our middle school students
. The exhibit
will be on display
in the Tower Hill Founders' Gallery from April 17 to 24 during school hours (8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.).

Earth Week - April 22-26
Next week WMS's Eco-Student Council is sponsoring
Earth Week - a week-long effort to raise awareness about caring for and respecting our planet. The council designated themes and activities for each day:
Monday: Earth Day at home (no classes in session)
Tuesday: LED lighting survey and information in the lobby during drop-off times
Wednesday: No-Waste Wednesday (pack a lunch that doesn't produce any non-organic waste)
Thursday: WMS Campus Clean-Up (clean-up areas assigned by level)
Friday:
- Elementary/Middle School assembly in the woods
- Kindergartners, middle-schoolers and Eco-Student Council members participate in Earth Week event at Bellevue State Park
- Classroom Earth Week celebrations

A Curious Mind: Beatrice Lintner (WMS '11) Dabbles in Art, Music, Psychology

Beatrice Lintner has always loved art. She cherishes the time she spent as a WMS student in the art room, and still has many of the prints and pastel work she made under art teacher Laurie Muhlbauer's guidance. But it took a year or so of pursuing art and art history as her college major for her to realize she might not find as much joy in art if she made it a career.
Now a sophomore at Barnard College in New York City, Beatrice recently declared a new major in psychology, with an eye toward a career in clinical psychology or nursing. However, it's still important to her to find outlets for her artistic talent. She's currently a staff illustrator at the Columbia Daily Spectator, the Columbia University newspaper, where she contributes weekly illustrations.
"I applied to Barnard as visual arts and art history major, but I changed my mind pretty quickly," she said. "I have a lot more fun [with art] on my own."

In addition to her illustration work, Beatrice also plays the cello in the Columbia student-led Bach Society. She's been playing the cello since she was a middle-school student at The Tatnall School, where she attended following her WMS graduation.
Reflecting on her time at WMS, Beatrice is grateful for the freedom she had to explore a wide range of subjects and activities.
"I didn't realize how good I had it until I switched schools," she said. "Montessori was so valuable. It made me so much more interested in everything and instills in students a natural curiosity that serves you well later."
This summer Beatrice will continue tapping into that curiosity when she studies abroad in Venice, Italy, with a focus on art history and learning Italian.
