Happy Earth Day! The countdown to summer has officially begun. Usually we get a reprieve from the busy winter months but with the amazing snow fall this year many resorts have extended their seasons. So if you are not ready to  give up on winter there is still plenty of opportunity to get out on the mountain. However, if you are ready to trade your ski boots for flip flops the prospect of warmer weather is welcome. Luckily the ice melts just as fast as it freezes around here but we are here to help it along. Read on to see what it takes to get the lake ready for the summer!

Winter Shop Work

Hello everyone,

It has been a good productive winter here in the shop, but very nice to have a little more hustle and bustle around as the weather is getting nicer. We had a lot of small to big projects, ranging from some gel coat fixes to some significant fiberglass and painting work, with a few rigging projects thrown in.

It really ended up being the winter of the keel repair. Most of the major issues seem to be water making its way through the aging gel coat on some of the dry sailed boats that sail with no bottom paint or special water barrier. This created cracks and bubbles, that when you dig into them the gel coat and fiberglass would fall apart. After some solid grinding to get all the bad parts out it was time to build the fiberglass back up. This was done with layers of fiber and using the vacuum bag process in the deeper spots and some filler to strengthen and smooth out any deformities in the lower spots. If anyone has any rigging questions or about how to prevent the material breakdown feel free to swing by the shop and say hi.

In conjunction with Town Clean Up Day, join Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, Summit County Open Space and Trails, the Dillon Reservoir Recreation Committee, and the Summit Shuttle for a morning of litter clean up on the shores of Summit County's crown jewel, Dillon Reservoir. The water levels are low, submerged trash has been exposed, and we are chomping at the bit to get out and start doing some good on our National Forest lands. After finishing up we will join in on the Town Clean-up BBQ of our choosing for a celebration!

Michael Franti and Spearhead
Saturday June 8th, 7:00 pm
Dillon Amphitheater

Michael Franti believes that there is a great battle taking place in the world today between cynicism and optimism, so he made his most recent album, Stay Human Vol. II, to remind himself and anyone else who's listening, that there is still good in the world and that it is worth fighting for.

From the Crow's Nest

The core crew is back for the season! It takes a lot of work to get this party back on the water and it all starts at the launch ramp. We are punching holes in the ice and aerating to bring the relatively warmer water to the surface.

The goal is to free A-dock and Rental dock from the ice, launch our rental fleet and utilize those boats to defend against the ice sheet. This is where we cross our fingers, toes, and everything else hoping that the main ice sheet does not come in and cause damage. Ice is a powerful thing! The hope is that the prevailing winds prevail, and the main ice sheet breaks up on the shore east of the marina. Once we deal with the ice, it's a race to set gangways, clean the place up and start launching boats. Mother Nature should be helping us next week with highs in the 50's and a welcome reprieve from winter. I am looking forward to seeing all of you again soon and getting down to what should be a fantastic summer here at the Dillon Marina.

News from the Office

By Karlee Ferris

Spring is here, and with it, our returning staff members are  getting the marina ready for summer. Yesterday we launched our first boat (not very far) of the season and started to help Mother Nature thaw the ice around our launch ramp. We're starting to remove shrink wrap from boats and getting ready to lay tiles and put the finishing touches on our new A-dock.

Our retail shop is also starting to take shape. UPS and FedEx are dropping off so many packages that everyday feels like Christmas. Shannon, Suzanne and I can not wait for you to see all the fun merchandise we picked out during the past few
months! Here is a sneak peek:

Please check your portal account and email for the 2019 spring work order or visit our website to fill one out online. The electronic form is the best way to ensure we get your work order in time. Please make sure you fill out what work needs to be done and let us know if you have any questions!
