Distinctly Bronze West 2019

Area 10 was well-represented at Distinctly Bronze West in March. There were 35 handbell musicians from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia & Alberta. The event featured music from two Composers from Area 10, Brian Tervo, with his arrangement of "The Muppet Show" theme and Matthew Compton's "Spires," an original composition.
If you have never attended a Distinctly Bronze event, or concert, imagine eight five-octave choirs (four on each side of the room) and a long row across the back of the lower bass bells. The choirs are made up of individual ringers who have gone through an application process with references or have completed DB events within the last 24 months with an alumni status of A or B. I enjoy ringing next to people that I just met, making new friends in the larger handbell community. The repertoire is lengthy and challenging. There were 12 selections; many were level four and above.
The event started on Thursday afternoon at the Resort at the Mountain in Welches, Oregon, on Mt. Hood, with the first run-through of most of the pieces. DB musicians are expected to come prepared and having practiced all of the selections. The event provides dinner on the first day, with more rehearsal in the evening. On Saturday, we had full choir rehearsals, as well as bass and treble sectionals. For the entire event, there were over 22 hours of rehearsal time.
One of the highlights of this years event was having Brian Childers as the Associate Conductor. Brian graciously led us through his arrangement of Ole' Dan Tucker Hoedown and by the end of the weekend we were singing, stomping, clapping and dancing in the aisles to this lively tune.
This
was my fourth event under the Direction of Dr. William Payne. Dr. Payne has high expectations and is funny and patient, not to mention brilliant. One of the things I love about events like Distinctly Bronze is the opportunity to work with such accomplished talents in the handbell world. I, like many of you, ring with my church and a community group. DB is an opportunity to be challenged to take my handbell musicianship to a higher level, and working with Dr. Payne was exactly that.
A final surprise. At the concert, our final piece was Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band, arranged by former DB West Associate Conductor Nick Hansen. During the final rehearsal and at the concert, Dr. Payne asked Brian Childers to count us in at the beginning at the piece. A few moments later, Dr. Payne reappears in a Sgt Pepper costume!
Going forward, there is a switch to the timing of the DB East and DB West events. Due to the DB East event being cancelled or postponed twice in recent years due to hurricane, the East event is moving to late winter and the west event will be in the fall. The next DB West will be in November 2020, in the Portland area.

 Notes from the Chair
In a recent meeting of an outreach ministry of our church, one of the young people being mentored asked "Why do you do this? Why do you volunteer?" As I thought about this, the subject of playing handbells came to mind. Indeed, why do I spend 2 - 3 hours in rehearsal every week, 4 hours on Sunday mornings once a month, untold hours preparing for Distinctly Bronze/West and then my duties as Area 10 Chair.
Well besides just my love of playing handbells, in an article in the Summer 2018 issue of Overtones, Board President P.L. Grove said the following which struck home to me:
"In a handbell team (choir), success is found by including everyone and building up those individuals who struggle in order to create something beautiful together. A handbell team reinforces the idea that you need to work together in order to achieve something great. In a handbell choir, the individuals are stronger because they are together, and their music is much more joyful because they are working as one."
Have you had that feeling? As all the members of the group have learned the notes and rhythms of their individual music and a piece starts to come together musically, the feeling that all are pulling together to make an offering greater than their own part grabs the group. One person alone (usually) cannot effect a crescendo, it takes the team. One person alone cannot effect a key change or meter change, it takes the team. And being a part of this "team" is one of the reasons why I enjoy being part of a handbell choir.

Join us for a full weekend of ringing and learning events.
Ringing begins on Saturday the 29th with COPPERS and TINS level rehearsals and continues on Sunday with MASSED rehearsals. The closing concert is Sunday at 4:00 pm with MASSED, COPPERS, TINS pieces and one Bronze Conference Choir piece.
Classes begin on Friday with 3 class sessions Friday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm and continuing on Saturday alternating with the TINS and COPPERS rehearsals. Instructors will include Matthew Compton, a few members of the Seattle Handbell Orchestra (SHO), Barb Brocker, Nancy Kirkner, Sheri Roach (certification class), Ellie Hodder (Certification Class) and Area 10 board members among others.
