Fun Fact:
Chileans love avocados!

Avocado, Aguacate, Palta...however you call it, Chileans love it!
A typical stroll through an outdoor market will introduce you to at least 5 varieties of this ugly-green-exterior with a yellow-green, smooth and buttery interior fruit.  (Yes, the avocado is a fruit)
Chileans serve "palta" chopped into soups;  mashed onto bread;  or the favorite:  spread on a hotdog!

Prayers & Praise
Praise God for an adult baptism and two confir-mations in the Mission Providencia this last month.

* Pray for the 2 current students in Jim's Introduction to the Bible class (Paula and Jesus), and that the class size would grow!

* Give thanks that Jose, an active church member, finally had an operation to remove cancerous section of bone in his femur. Pray that the cancer stays in remission.

* Continue to pray for our coworkers' son, Natanael, who after a difficult surgery on his leg, was hospitalized for 2 months. After being released from the hospital, he was re-admitted because he contracted "osteomyelitis", a serious bone infection.

* Pray for our friend, Pastor Darrell Stuehrenberg, in rehab after recent surgery on some cancerous lesions along his spinal column.

* Thank God for 6 new family contacts that arrived at our mission through a Kids English Club during the school winter break in July. Pray that the seeds planted would be watered grow!

* Praise God for over 20 children who came to the VBS program at the "mother" congregation "La Cruz de Cristo" last week!

* Thank the Lord for the many immigrants we meet weekly. Thank Him for listening to our prayers and directing these new friends to employment. Pray that God will continue to use us to guide these people and connect them to a Christian family at our Church/home.

* Pray for God's direction as we seek to rent a new space (something larger) for our growing mission!

"Jesus... was led by the Spirit into the wilderness." (Luke 4:1)

Radio host Garrison Keillor often spoke about Lutherans on his show,  The Prairie Home Companion . He sometimes poked fun at the gloomy outlook of Lutherans, which was funny because there is some truth to it. Lutherans can be a morose lot, for whom being "led by the Spirit" means nothing more than following Jesus into a wilderness of temptation, trial, pain, and suffering. Our "Lutheran perspective" can cause us to question the legitimacy of those ministries where everything seems to go right, where the church is growing, and where prayers are visibly answered. Personally, I have never been in a ministry like that... until now! God is answering our prayers in often remarkable ways. It is still a wilderness that God is leading us into, and there are trials both ahead and behind us, but God is at work!

Answers to Prayer!
I'm not really used to seeing quick answers to prayer. Maybe it's because I don't always know what to look for. Or maybe it's because I don't always remember what I prayed for! I know that God hears and answers our prayers, and I know His answer isn't necessarily going to be the answer I had in mind. Sometimes the answer is "no". You don't always get what you pray for.
That has NOT been the case in our new mission church! We have had a remarkable experience over the past few months that we need to share with you. As you can imagine, one of the main concerns of new immigrants is finding a job. As new arrivals to Chile visit our church, one of their top concerns is always, I need a job FAST". So during the Sunday service, we pray for those who need a job - AND THEY ALWAYS GET ONE! Often in a few days, and nearly all of them before the next Sunday! Every single person who needed a job found one after we prayed for them! See their pictures below. Sometimes, you get exactly what you prayed for!

A Big Need
Our immigrant ministry is going strong, but it is also presenting us with a financial challenge. Up to this point, we have been financing the ministry out of the generous contributions given for our personal support. However, the ministry has grown to the point to where the real cost is about $1000 per month, which is putting a severe strain on our finances. We applied for a grant to subsidize the ministry, but unfortunately we did not get the grant. We are looking for God to provide a total of $12,000 for the next 12 months of operation of the ministry to immigrants. God also speaks English!
contributor: Elianeth Pineda
Liisa leads an opening song
Language is no barrier when we want to communicate with God, because He speaks all of them! This was made evident through our Winter Vacation English Club, which brought together at our mission children from different parts of Santiago to enjoy the activities dreamed up by our teacher, Liisa Tino. The emphasis on English in the schools of Santiago presented us with an opportunity to plant the love of Jesus in the hearts of the children through songs, dance, games, crafts, and English lessons.
English Club rocks!
Children from 7 to 13 years old participated and learned, and by the end of the week they were able to greet, introduce themselves, name the parts of the body, identify the seasons, name animals and colors - all in English! They also learned about God their creator and Father. Liisa was ably assisted by members of our mission, Evila, Alejandra, and Elianeth. The biggest success of the program was to introduce the children to Jesus and to see their smiling faces! Children and parents were invited to a closing musical presentation and also to Sunday worship, where those who were present received a Certificate of Award for successfully completing the program.
One Million Percent?
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently issued its inflation forecast for Venezuela for this year, and the IMF predicts inflation will be 1 million percent! In practical terms, this means that if something costs you one dollar in January, that same item will cost you a ten thousand dollars in December! Venezuelans are fleeing the social and economic disaster of their country in droves, which is driving our immigrant ministry.
But what about the Lutheran churches in Venezuela? Global Lutheran Outreach has a missionary couple in Venezuela, Rev. David and Luz Maria Ernst. Pastor Ernst reflects on what things look like from the other side in his recent newsletter - click here to read it! (Pastor Ernst is also in need of additional ministry partners.)

Baby News!
Our third grandchild, Braxton Ryan
Isn't he the cutest?
Howey,  made h is entrance on May 25th! Liisa was able to travel to Florida a few weeks ahead of the birth to help Soni and Ty, and Jim joined them all in early June to meet his new grandson. Jim also had the joy of welcoming Braxton to God's family through the waters of baptism on June 10th at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Ft. Lauderdale.

We praise God for each of you,  our "mission partners". In addition to providing our living expenses, your financial contributions have also been supporting our immigrant ministry in Santiago, which is growing!
