LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, it seems as if all of 2020 has been cancelled.

As a Sports Physical Therapist I know, however, we will come back stronger. In IFSPT we have focused on expanding our international reach by working hard on providing useful resources via social media. We are currently on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. As each country and region is in a different COVID-19 situation and stage,  providing global guidelines about how to return to sport, in a safe and efficient manner is not possible. So instead IFSPT tries to share useful resources on this issue through our website and social media.

Please help us in sharing relevant information, even if this is specific for your country, region or sport, as this may help others in the Sports Physical Therapy community to do the best possible professional job.

Hopefully, 2021 will not be cancelled, as we are looking very much forward to meeting internationally again at conferences and meetings. What the crisis has probably taught many of us is that online meetings, webinars and conferences can connect us very efficiently globally, and as such can be a very effective tool for sharing and exchanging professional knowledge and information. The option for improving and aligning Sports Physical Therapy globally has never been better. But still something is missing, and meeting online can never beat the real thing when it comes to forming genuine professional and international alliances and collaboration.

We are therefore proud in IFSPT to be able to reveal the main topic of the 4th World Congress in Sports Physical Therapy - Translating Science into Action. This congress will build upon the success of previous IFSPT World Congresses which was begun as an every second year event in 2015 in Bern. This congress has set the standard for high quality sports medicine presentations presented by female and male leaders of our profession. The 4th World Congress to be held in Denmark will be another example of global sports medicine leadership from IFSPT and we hope to see you there!

Yours,

Kristian Thorborg
President, IFSPT
EARLY CAREER SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAMS: HOW IS YOUR ORGANIZATION ATTRACTING THESE MEMBERS?
Since the General Meeting in Vancouver in 2019 the new Education and Registration sub-committee of the IFSPT have been reviewing its aims and foci. One area where the committee wants to focus attention is on early career sports physical therapists to compliment the current work with countries developing IFSPT pathways leading to RISPT status.

If your member organization currently has a focus on this group of members, does work to promote physiotherapists to gain experience and work in sport or is willing to share "good practice" in this field, please get in touch with Colin Paterson  . The IFSPT wants to share good practice, promote experiences from different countries to generate ideas and collaborations, and for countries to look to develop work in this aspect of career development.

In the first "spotlight" on early career sports physical therapists the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy share their current work.

Early Career Professionals Involvement within the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy
The demographics of American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (AASPT) are changing. Most recently, we have seen a significant increase in student membership and those who have been practicing sports physical therapy for less than 5 years. This group brings new energy and excitement to the AASPT! In order to better understand and successfully meet the needs of our younger membership, the AASPT established a committee, called the early career professionals (ECPs). The ECP committee consists of six AASPT members who are either student members or members who have been practicing sports physical therapy for <5 years. This group represents the change that is occurring- changes in how communication is delivered, how continuing education is packaged, and how the ever-changing role of technology impacts our academy and our profession. The over-arching goal of the ECP committee is to foster professional development of sports physical therapists in the early stages of their career.

This past February, the ECP committee held their first meeting at the annual Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in Denver. The feedback and insights brought forth by the ECP committee proved to be invaluable and insightful.

They established two short-term priorities for the next year and one long-term goal.

First, the committee recommended utilization of a platform that would allow ECPs to easily communicate with one another to discuss relevant topics, including sports residencies, employment opportunities, and continuing education options. Secondly, the ECP committee identified a need for educational programming targeted specifically to foster their professional development. They expressed interest in educational sessions focused on resume writing, interviewing strategies, and residency and fellowship options. Lastly, a long-term goal of the ECP committee is to work closely with AASPT leadership to create leadership opportunities within the AASPT specifically for early-career members.

The goal is to create progressive, step-wise leadership positions with well-defined roles and responsibilities. This will allow ECPs to start taking low-risk leadership positions while being paired with experienced leaders; the experienced leaders will provide the ECPs with supervision and mentoring.

It is the goal of the AASPT leadership to foster the development of our early career professionals. By providing a communication platform, educational and leadership opportunities, we are off to a great start!

Jill Thein-Nissenbaum. Chair; Early Career Professional (ECP) Task Force.

COVID-19
With the fast evolving global situation created by the spread of COVID-19, we are aware that many of you have been impacted by the pandemic and the uncertainty it has created. WCPT and the congress programme committee will continue to monitor the situation relating to COVID-19, but for now planning is proceeding for an exciting WCPT congress in Dubai next April and we will advise you if there are any changes likely to impact the event.

WCPT is supporting its member organisations and their members with information and resources, in a number of languages, about COVID-19: www.wcpt.org/news/Novel-Coronavirus-2019-nCoV

Call for abstracts opens
The call for abstracts for poster and platform presentations is now open. The deadline is 30 July.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession's largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, WCPT is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:
  • report on the latest research with original scientific data
  • address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
  • describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Resources for abstract submitters
If you have limited experience of abstract submissions, presenting at a WCPT congress or if English is not your first language, we have put together several tools to help you.

Selection criteria
Submitted abstracts will go through a blind peer-review process carried out by international reviewers.

The following principles will be used to review abstracts.
  • Does the report address a "significant" or "important" issue?
  • Do the methods/approach enable the question to be answered rigorously?
  • Have the data/findings been interpreted appropriately?
  • Are the contents of the abstract clear and logical?

Registration
Registration fees will be available to view on the congress website next month, including deadlines for early bird rates.

Registration will open in June.

Focused symposia announced
Key speakers and sessions have been announced for congress.

The congress programme includes 12 confirmed focused symposia featuring 55 speakers from around the world. Focused symposia are core sessions where cutting edge relevant topics will be explored from an international and diverse perspective. High profile speakers will create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

"Focused symposia are a great opportunity to hear from world-renowned speakers that are experts in their area and gain a unique global understanding and insight into a particular field" said Shane Patman, chair of WCPT's congress programme committee.

WCPT NEWS

WCPT has published its second  briefing paper as part of the response by the global physiotherapy profession to COVID-19.

The briefing paper focuses on rehabilitation and the vital role of physiotherapy and looks at:
  • acute physiotherapy management of patients with COVID-19
  • rehabilitation of people after COVID-19
  • people living with a disability and frail older people: immediate and episodic rehabilitation
  • people with short-term rehabilitation needs where routine care has been suspended

WCPT calls on WHA73 to expand funding for rehabilitation
WCPT submitted a   statement  to last week's World Health Assembly calling on its members to commit to expanding funding for rehabilitation, as part of the global response to COVID-19.

Emma Stokes, WCPT president, said: 'This is both a short-term measure so the human cost of this pandemic can be minimised, but also to ensure rehabilitation services are established as a key pillar of routine universal health coverage within national health systems across the globe.

'Physiotherapy has a critical role to play in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the global community. However, with many services suspended during the period of physical distancing, people will likely experience a deterioration of other conditions unrelated to COVID-19.'

WCPT has launched a survey with the International Physiotherapy History Association (IPHA) to gather information on how COVID-19 is redefining physiotherapy education, practice and the profession.

Reflecting that the impact of COVID-19 may change lives and communities forever, WCPT and IPHA would like to gather stories and experiences from physiotherapists around the world to help create a snapshot of the impact of COVID-19. Stories and experiences will be gathered at future dates to make sure we continue to collate the impact of COVID-19.

The survey is available in:
This first invitation to take part is open until  30 June 2020.

The deadline to submit applications for the WCPT appeals committee is 3 June 2020.

The role of the appeals committee is to consider and determine the outcome of any appeals by organisations against membership-related decisions by the membership committee and the WCPT Board, in accordance with the constitution and relevant regulations. As the committee is being established for the first time there are five vacancies - one from each WCPT region. Applicants need to have prior experience considering and determining outcomes of complaints or appeals and must be supported by their national member organisation.

UPCOMING CONGRESSES

In the context of COVID-19 and recent developments, the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy has decided to postpone the BFSP Congress 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy to Saturday, 21 November 2020.

This decision was made based on the advice of the competent authorities and the measures that apply within the universities.

As the COVID-19 is quickly spreading around the world, our number one concern is the health and safety of delegates, speakers, exhibitors and staff.

Registrations will be transferred to the conference in November.

We are very grateful for the support of our exhibitors and participants so far and we hope to welcome you to Brussels on 21 November for the 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy.

With kind regards,
The BFSP board
