National ParkRx Day 2019
is Sunday, April 28. It’s a day when people from all different sectors organize events to encourage people to get out into green spaces and parks in an effort to embrace the health benefits of nature. Many fellows have been taking an active role in ParkRx initiatives in their own counties and recently several Bay Area fellows were able to present their work at the
Health Parks, Healthy People Forum
on April 9
th

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Heart Association recently issued this joint policy statement in favor of several policies aiming to reduce SSB consumption.
This law, which would create an extra 10¢ per breakfast reimbursement to purchase California-grown fresh fruits and vegetables for districts providing universally free school meals, recently gained bipartisan support and will now
move to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

The Institute serves as the coordinating agency, and provides space for this network to share best practices and workshop challenges around each county's pilot ParkRx programs. This original study publication highlights the work of
UCSF Professor Dr. Hilary Seligman
’s team. They tested two policy-relevant hypotheses through a randomized community-based trial. Although primary outcomes did not yield significant changes, the secondary outcome, food insecurity, increased in all groups.

Issued on an annual basis, the School Breakfast Scorecard looks at participation rates among low-income students in School Breakfast Programs by state. Analysis for 2017 – 2018 showed a 1.2% increase in overall participation. Factors impacting participation growth rates are discussed in the report.
