BobBlast #281
"Best of BobBlast - Practicing Effective Color Combinations.
"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
I am in Raleigh, North Carolina for the annual Art of the Carolinas Trade Show - one of my workshops is a three-hour Color Wheel class, not unlike this week's BobBlast!
Practice makes perfect... or something like that!
This BobBlast is all about the starting points of a painting - one of my 4 Cs that I determine before starting to paint:
What is the Concept?
What is the Composition?
W
hat is the Color Combination?
and Staying Committed to all of the above!
To figure out your Color Combination, use a Color Wheel - It's one of your tools in your toolbox. All of the pleasing combinations have been worked out for us! On the Standard Color Wheel, if you are just getting started, practice painting with a triadic color combination, like Red, Yellow and Blue.
Besides the Classic, or Standard Color Wheel, I use my own Goof-Proof Color Wheel - using only 4 colors... in today's demo, you will see me practice with Holbein Acrylic Inks and white titanium.
For this Demo, here is my Color Combination:
Dominant Color is Blue
Focal Point Color is Red Yellow
Spice Color is Purple
Spice Color is Green
The dominant color blue has already been spread on the surface. The background is a loose abstract. My concept is to paint a vertical figure on top of the abstract.
So my concept is a Figure in an Abstract.
My composition is Vertical
My color combination is Blue Dominant.
After the dominant color is on the surface of the painting, I add the focal point color - as a loose figure. The spice colors are always placed near the focal point. Then I re-establish the dominant color for more contrast.
This loose painting warmup exercise gets me going early in the studio and in worksh
ops.
Keep your brushes wet!
Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my website and my YouTube Channel. We post new studio tips weekly that offer real content, substance and useful techniques that work for me. And they're free! We appreciate your interest, questions, comments and support!
Some of our subscribers have asked about the "behind the scenes" people who make the weekly BobBlast possible - so we want to give a shout out and thank Bo von Hohenlohe for editing the BobBlast videos. Bo also produces websites and helps authors self-publish book. Please visit his website at www.bvhprods.com.
Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing an exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com
Here's a quick reminder and some upcoming workshops and dates.
