A Message from Karyn

Happy Spring!

We can't believe last month went by so fast. We have so many things coming to our supporters including this week's distribution of Flying Free: The Bessie Coleman Story for those who supported the campaign on Kickstarter. Speaking of Kickstarter, I wanted to share another campaign to support that's close to my heart. This summer, I co-starred in a movie called "Sweet Thing" with my two kids, written and directed by my husband, Alex Rockwell. We've already finished with shooting, and are now turning to Kickstarter to raise the final productions funds. I hope you can join us! There are a ton of fun rewards, including some from me, Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Beals, and more! You can learn more about the campaign here

This month, our newsletter also celebrates Black women who have turned the world upside down with their triumphs despite the obstacles that stood in their way. Be sure to check out the below in addition to opportunities to support our organization and have us come to your town.

We hope you enjoy!

Best,

Karyn
Celebrating African-American Women's Fitness Month

Simone Biles. Venus & Serena Williams. These are names our minds jump to when thinking of women of color who are currently dominating the fitness scene. As April marks African American Women's Fitness Month, Sweet Blackberry is taking the time to recognize Black women who continue to bring their A-game to the scene.

Here is a fun activity and answer sheet you can share with any child to celebrate the month of April!

Coming Soon:

Most of our supporters have received their Kickstarter reward, but for those who haven't, don't worry, we'll be getting those to you soon!

In the next couple of days, we will be sharing the Flying Free: The Bessie Coleman Story digital download with our supporters who signed up for that reward. Need help picking a movie for a special night?
We have a "little" suggestion...

This month, 14-year old actress, Marsai Martin best known for her role as Diane on black-ish became the youngest person in Hollywood to ever produce a studio film.

Inspired by one of her mother's favorite movies, Big, Little centers on a tech mogul, played by Regina Hall, whose life changes when she wakes up to see her 13-year old self staring back at her in the mirror.

Little is playing nationwide! Be sure to also check out your local theatre's for special deals such as AMC's $5 Tuesdays!

Bring Sweet Blackberry To Your Area

Want to bring Sweet Blackberry to your area? You got it! Sweet Blackberry will come to your school or community event to share our mission and the triumphant stories of individuals surmounting the odds and making invaluable contributions to our society.

As you know, Black history is rarely touched on in our schools and even if it is, it's often only about a handful of individuals and usually during the shortest month year. Sweet Blackberry's stories illustrate the concept that tremendous obstacles are actually opportunities for greatness!

Sweet Blackberry visits all come with a film screening, hands on activity, teaching guides and a questions and answer session with our founder, Karyn Parsons.

To learn more about these visits, please contact us at admin@sweetblackberry.org
Book of the Month:
Sulwe
By Lupita Nyong'o

From Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o comes a powerful, moving picture book about colorism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within.

Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.

In this stunning debut picture book, actress Lupita Nyong'o creates a whimsical and heartwarming story to inspire children to see their own unique beauty.
