Legislature Extends State of
Emergency through April 30

Using extraordinary and unprecedented protocols to protect the health of legislators and staff in attendance, the Legislature today approved by voice vote a concurrent resolution extending the coronavirus state of emergency and disaster declarations through April 30.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer had sought a 70-day extension of the emergency and disaster declarations. Today's legislative action extends the declarations set to expire today by 23 days.

To be clear, the extension of the emergency and disaster declarations does not necessarily mean an extension of the Governor's “Stay Home. Stay Safe” executive order and other orders intended to mitigate the spread of the virus. However, we do expect the Governor to make announcements on that front yet this week.

Senate Workgroup to Focus
on Transition Back to Work

Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) and Senator Ken Horn (F-Frankenmuth) announced yesterday the formation of the “Safe Behavior for Safe Workplaces” which will work together with business leaders, medical professionals and citizens to develop a plan to bring more workplaces back online when it is safe to do so.

MMA issued a press release praising the effort and recognizing the contributions of Michigan manufacturers in producing the personal protective equipment that is so critically needed by health care professionals and first responders. As conditions improve, it is manufacturing productivity that will drive the economic recovery and reverse the the stunning economic conditions people are facing.

MMA will be working closely with the workgroup to identify practical recommendations for safely and systematically re-opening business activity and get Michigan’s economy and families back on track.
