to the WWS students exhibiting in the virtual 2020 Friends of the Yellow Barn Annual High School Student Exhibition

For the first time ever, this annual exhibition has been posted virtually. So, settle in and enjoy watching this presentation now through September 1st.
Of the fourteen works submitted for jurying this year, seven were accepted, and of these, six were awarded Honorable Mention. We tip our hat to ALL of our earnest high school artists, in recognition of their talent, effort and commitment.

WWS Recognized for Recycling and Waste Reduction
|
|
In addition to describing our tangible, daily efforts around recycling and waste reduction, they recognized our community in this way: "The school interweaves the natural world throughout their curriculum, so students have an evolving appreciation and understanding of nature and how to live and work sustainably."

Rose Ceremony Online Assembly
Friday, May 29 at 2:30pm
The first graders have a new way to offer roses to their seniors and to wish them well as they prepare to graduate. We will share information about this "assembly" via ParentSquare soon.
We are grateful to the first grade (teachers, parents and students) for creating this new form to wish the seniors well at this milestone.
As with events on campus, photos/screenshots and recording are not permitted.

Senior Graduation via Zoom
Saturday, May 30 at 2pm
Everyone is invited! Join us, online and by those invisible threads that connect us still, to celebrate this milestone in the lives of the seniors, their families and the school.
The graduation will be in a webinar format, so audience members will not appear and you really are invited to come as you are.
As with events on campus, photos/screenshots and recording are not permitted.

Graduation Speaker: Frank Hall
We are very glad that Frank Hall will give the address at graduation this year. Many of us already know him as a longstanding and beloved teacher in our high school. He retired from full time teaching in 2018, but has returned by popular demand to teach a current events and debate elective. Mr. Hall received a Diploma in Waldorf Education (Waldorf Institute of Mercy College, Detroit), 1980. He also received an M.A. in American literature, Highest Honors, NC State, 1975. Mr. Hall taught high school humanities at the Detroit and Washington Waldorf Schools for 40 years. He was a founding member of WWS College, and sponsored the first high school class. Along the way he also served as College Chair and High School Chair. Emily, his daughter, is a WWS alumnus. Anna, his wife, is a retired Acorn Hill kindergarten teacher. His interests include astronomy, hiking, tennis, poetry, philosophy, and card magic. Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy has long been an inspiration to him. He taught English and main lessons to the Class of 2020 in their ninth and tenth grade years.

Cards are $5 each. We will use a new card for each game. Families are welcome to purchase one for the family or cards for each person.

Angst, the Movie - High School Screening & Available On Demand
Wednesday, June 3 - Tuesday, June 9
This award winning documentary was created to open a dialogue and normalize - not trivialize - anxiety to allow us to help each other and ourselves. IndieFlix recommends ages 10 to adult, and we recommend middle school age to adult. The run time is 56 minutes, the viewing site offers an "at home" discussion guide and other resources.
The whole High School will have a screening and class forum discussions - June 4. Viewing on demand will be available to the WWS community for free, June 3 - June 9.
We will share viewing information in the Bulletin on June 3.

Parent Zoom Meeting - Wednesday June 3 from 5- 5:30pm
Parents from all classes are invited to a short Parent Zoom meeting to talk about end of year teacher and staff appreciation gifts.
It will be wonderful to work together this year on a thank you from all parents, all across the grades! It is fine to come late or leave early to this open meeting. We also will talk briefly about a possible end of year Zoom Party, inviting all parents, faculty and staff.

submit listings
by COB Tuesdays with the subject "Bulletin Submission." Bulletin Board notices generally run for 3 weeks - if space allows - unless other arrangements have been made. There is no charge for listings.

Article: Art in time of Crisis - Raphael’s ‘Healing’ Madonna

Please enjoy this meditation on the most famous of Raphael's 'healing' Madonnas - quite ubiquitous in Waldorf schools on both sides of the Atlantic it seems. As Steiner intended an image like this one to be therapeutic, I thought this challenging time would be suitable moment to offer it for the community.

New J.K. Rowling Story Looking for Illustrations

Dear J.K. Rowling fans!
Here is the link where you will find the Rowling's latest story:
"The Ickabog will be published for free on this website, in instalments, over the next seven weeks, a chapter (or two, or three), at a time. It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.
The most exciting part, for me, at least, is that I’d like you to illustrate The Ickabog for me. Every day, I’ll be making suggestions for what you might like to draw. You can enter the official competition being run by my publishers, for the chance to have your artwork included in a printed version of the book due out later this year. I’ll be giving suggestions as to what to draw as we go along, but you should let your imagination run wild."

Learn Irish fiddle, flute, tin whistle, bodhran (Irish drum) and guitar this summer!
Discover the joy of traditional Irish music in small group lessons via Zoom! Learn traditional Irish jigs, reels and hornpipes with a small group (3-5) of your friends
and classmates.
Tunes will be taught traditionally - by ear. Recordings will be provided at least a week in advance and sheet music will be made available as a follow up or all melody instruments.
Deepen your listening skills, sharpen your ear, gain new technique and have fun learning to play traditional Irish music!
Tuition: 10 classes beginning the week of June 15 through end of summer = $225
Minimum three people per class and no more than five. Exact schedule TBD per
group. Financial aid available if needed.
