Such Fun! Protected Harbor was featured on August 27th during “Faith and Family” night at the Mighty Mussels minor league baseball game in Ft. Myers. Matthew, one of our residents, even threw the first pitch of the game! The entire stadium cheered as he responded to the applause with his infectious smile. It was a wonderful night of fun and fellowship with a beautiful display of dazzling fireworks to wrap up the evening’s festivities. God is good!

Looking ahead, Protected Harbor is working with Trailways Forward in organizing our first Spiritual Camp. We will launch this exciting partnership in October when our residents and six special guests will enjoy three action-packed days and nights of worshipping, swimming, canoeing, fishing, archery, art classes, and so much more. The motto of this camp is “Just the way I am.”

You Can Change Lives…
We are excited to announce our partnership with Florida State University. We will be the host site for two AmeriCorps Vista candidates. We are looking for caring professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of God’s Special People. The members must be at least 18 years of age.

These positions will assist us with capacity building activities such as fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment. AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program serve in an office setting to gain and utilize their experience and leadership skills. This opportunity prepares young adults for a life of service in the public, private, or nonprofit sector. It also provides opportunities for retired senior citizens to use their life-long skills and abilities to help create more programs and services for adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities live their best lives!

The positions provide a pre-tax living stipend of $587.30 bi-weekly which comes to $1,174 monthly. The AmeriCorps member can select either the $6,300 Segal Educational Award OR a one-time $1,800 Cash Award to be paid upon completion of a one year term.  In addition there are health insurance options and child care reimbursements if needed.

We have limited time to fill these two AmeriCorps VISTA service opportunities and hope that you will share this opportunity with everyone you know. If interested please send your resume to: l.mottram@godsprotectedharbor.org.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Pete & Cindy Garritt
Pete and Cindy Garrit
We are pleased to announce Pete and Cindy Garritt have joined our team of Direct Support Professionals serving residents in Protected Harbor II. They learned about our ministry from former staff members Kim and Suzy Brooks during a small group meeting at Kings Church in Lakeland, FL.

Another couple in that same small group, Debbie and Pat Kappenman also helped pique their interest when they too began working with Protected Harbor. Cindy had shared with them that she missed the special needs community, especially after her special needs son Duncan passed away. Cindy had recently retired from her career as a flight attendant, so the convergence of circumstances became God’s way of answering her prayers.
Behind the Smiles: Meet Deb
Deb
Deb moved into Protected Harbor in July of 2019. Before that she lived in a group home in Texas, so she had no prior connection or even awareness of our existence. Since arriving in her new home, she has adjusted well to her new lifestyle which provides greater independence plus innumerable chances for friendships, activities, and socialization.

Deb’s daily schedule begins with a large cup of coffee and some quiet time, reading, and prayer. She loves animals, cats in particular, so much of her interest revolves around the care of domesticated animals and researching wildlife. In fact, she wishes she could volunteer at an animal shelter.
We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from our donors.  In response to the many calls we receive asking how you can help, we are continuing our new Online Wish List.  Click the Contribution link on the left for a current list of items needed and desired for the homes.  Items are shipped directly to the homes making it even easier for those wishing to lend an extra hand of support.
