9TH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST - AUG 2, 2020

AUGUST 2nd - 9TH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST
God's economics...

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of hot dogs, this Reverendfun cartoon hits home. Joe's Hot Dog stand has a tough day as Jesus freely feeds 5000+ people with five loaves of bread and two fish.

This miracle doesn't compute in a capitalistic and consumer-centered economy. It didn't compute in Jesus' time either...where rarely anyone other than the rich "ate and were filled."

Yet, the life of faith...and the role of life together in Christ...has never been about things computing...or making sense...yet trusting in a God of abundance and promise in a world that is always filled with uncertainty and "not enough." Maybe this miracle is the one we need to hear again and again as we prepare for the Fall and all that won't make sense or compute in the coming months. It reminds us that God has practice working with scarcity...and revealing abundance...a God who is always found dwelling among people in need. It reminds us that God doesn't have anything against hotdogs...but has a universe-sized heart to feed people...spiritually...but ALSO tangibly with food.

If you haven't taking the COVID$19 CHALLENGE yet, I hope you will. This challenge, which sprouted out of one of our Social Outreach Committee meetings this summer, has multiplied across our larger community. In a little over a week nearly $4,000 has already been raised for The Helping Center. The challenge goes through August 19th! This challenge is well on its way to feeding 5000+.

Finally, if you haven't had a chance to take the FALL SURVEY, I would love it if you would give 10 precious minutes and provide your input. Thank you.

So, go, embody God's economics, that all might say, "we ate and were filled."

Peace,
Pastor Vanicek

Special thanks to those who helped make our online worship possible this morning, a powerful witness that even though space may separate us, it is the love of God in Christ which connects and re-connects us this day and always (Olivia Cheesman, Matthew Martin, Kelly Martin, Deborah Vanicek, Virginia Vanicek, The Womack Family).
LIVE-STREAM WORSHIP
The live-stream worship begins at 9AM on Sunday on YouTube and Facebook. Visit our website ( CLICK HERE ) for links to all our online resources for worship and communication.
This Sunday's worship is printed in a downloadable bulletin to aid in your worship this weekend.
DWELLING IN THE WORD
Martin Luther argued that “the ears are the only organs of a Christian,” since it is through the ear that life begins, through hearing the preached Word of God.

Read scripture from YOUR Bible at home. Remember the story of who gave you or how you got your Bible. May this story remind you of your connection to Christ & others.

READINGS FOR PENTECOST+9
Isaiah 55:1-5 (hear God's promises)
Psalm 145:8-9,14-21 (The Lord is...)

REMEMBERING OUR COMMUNION
One thing that many miss is sharing in Holy Communion.  This time invites us to turn our question from, "How do we receive Holy Communion?” to “How does the Word of God come to us and how do we receive the Word of God?
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Prayer is central to the life of faith because it connects us to God and each other, a reminder that we are never socially distanced in Christ. Please say these names aloud as a way of lifting them up to God this day. Names in bold were added this past week. You are welcome in this time of prayer to include your own joys and concerns.

OFFERINGS AND GIFTS TO GOD
Thank you for your continued generosity toward our operating budget during this time.

Stewardship quote for the week:

"Whenever we have excess, giving should be our natural response. It should be the automatic decision, the obvious thing to do in light of Scripture and human need." - Randy Alcorn, "Money, Possessions, and Eternity"

If you’re not using electronic giving, you can still mail your offering to the church at 1803 Highway 1431 West, Marble Falls, TX 78654 . And if you’re not already a sustaining member of our ministry through our Consecration Sunday process, this is a great time to ask the question, "What % of my income is God calling me to give?" Even a commitment of $5 or $10 a week can make a huge difference in our community.

you want to give to 830-460-5757.
BLESSING FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
May the God of Life
be your guide on the road every day,
be your refuge in times of uncertainty,
and be your rest in times of fatigue.
May the God of Life
strengthen you when you feel weak,
comfort you when you feel sad,
and hug you when you feel alone.
May the God of Life,
who loves you and knows you,
cover you with the tenderness of a Mother.
Forever.
Amen.
