Spring brings a breathe of fresh air each year and this year is no different. With students back in school and students being able to look forward to some normal events such as prom, outdoor sports/activities, and hopefully a majority of their extracurriculars are back on track.
With that said, we as educators can hopefully find our schedules looking a bit more familiar as well. We hope this month's newsletter will provide you some planning ideas for the summer and into next year.

Trauma Sensitive Schools
One in four children have been exposed to a traumatic event that may have a lasting impact on the well-being and functioning of students and their families. By understanding how trauma impacts students and adopting a trauma-informed approach, educators can play a crucial role in mitigating both the short and long-term effects of trauma. This interactive workshop will leave you with a renewed commitment to reach some of the most vulnerable students and their families.

The focus of the 5-part webinar series is increasing the effectiveness of instructional cycles centered on the ND Prioritized Standards for ELA and Math.
Facilitated by Jan Hoegh from Marzano Resources, the sessions include:
- Session 1: Determining What Students Still Need to Learn
- Session 2: Effective Planning for Teaching the Most Critical Content (Part 1)
- Session 3: Effective Planning for Teaching the Most Critical Content (Part 2)
- Session 4: Effective Monitoring of Student Learning – Types of Assessment and how to design effective assessments
- Session 5: Effective Monitoring of Student Learning – High-quality common assessments & how to use the results
|
|
Participants were offered the opportunity to participate in the Live webinars and will also receive access to the recorded webinars thru June 2022. In addition, SEEC, NESC, and CREA staff have provided school support sessions for additional planning and brainstorming sessions on how the content and resources can be used now – during the 4th quarter, and also going forward into the summer and 2021-22 school year.
All ND REAs are engaged in additional conversations about how regional opportunities and support sessions may be made available going forward. All resources will be shared at the conclusion of the series and available for statewide use.
If your school or district is working on establishing or strengthening your Tier 1/guaranteed and viable curriculum to ensure equity for all students – check out all of the resources available to you at https://ndrea.org/index.php?id=111 with more to come!

During the past few months, NDDPI Supt. Baesler and Sal Khan have discussed how to better meet the needs of North Dakota students and schools.
Together, they reached a solution to provide free tutoring to ND students. Through a MOU with the NDDPI, Schoolhouse.world will provide free tutoring for math (pre-algebra through calculus), SAT prep, and college applications through their website.
Tutoring can be used independently or to complement Khan Academy lessons. Small-group, high-impact tutoring is immensely effective in closing achievement gaps, and this partnership can be beneficial for students, as well as for teachers and administrators. The free network is now available to all North Dakota schools and students.

NESC Statewide STEAM Event Series for Students in Grades 3-12 - You're Hired!
You're Hired! is an experience that allows students to use STEAM along with 21st Century Skills to solve real, present-day problems. Students work as a team (company) to find a unique solution and then present their proposals to a boardroom. Through strong research and planning, innovative design, and persuasive presentation, a team will hear the words, "You're Hired!"
You're Hired! can be an introduction to project or problem-based learning. There is no right answer to the problem presented within each of the You're Hired! modules. These problems are designed to engage students in the 4 C's (communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking) and STEAM. With this event, the process is more important than the product, although the students delight in showcasing the product!
