Why is my digital presence important during a job search?
Managing and enhancing your digital presence is an important component of a job search. Why? Because according to a recent study by CareerBuilder, 47 percent of employers say they are less likely to interview candidates they can’t find online.

Digital presence is simply defined as what people can find out about you when they search the internet. With digital presence, comes responsibility. It is prudent to pay attention to your digital presence both personally and professionally.

We know employers are looking for you online. So, keep in mind, this is not just on LinkedIn. Employers are also searching to learn more about you personally. Make it a habit to “google” yourself. See what comes up. Is it consistent and accurate about what people should know about you? Is there someone else with the same name? As you continually enhance your digital presence, control your narrative, and build your personal brand. You will see a difference over time in what your digital presence conveys about you.

There are a number of ways to enhance your digital presence. You can start a website or a blog using your name. Employers are looking for individuals who are creative and passionate about their work. Through a website or blog, you can showcase your expertise, share information about your background beyond your resume, and create an online portfolio that could include work examples, awards and accomplishments.
You can also join and participate in professional associations. This is a great networking opportunity in the digital space. Professional associations are always looking for individuals to contribute to online discussion forums, write blog posts or articles, or even present at webinars.

Creating and controlling your digital presence is a great way to further distinguish yourself and your personal brand. With a bit of effort and planning you can be sharing and connecting with others in just a matter of a few clicks.

We want to hear from you. How are you managing and enhancing your digital presence and social footprint? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the CRC’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages.
