Wow! I didn't realize, when I agreed to produce the newsletter for Area 10 that I'd be following in such huge footsteps. No, Phyllis, I'm not saying you have big feet. I'm saying, "WOW!" to producing the newsletter for 14 years. We all need to send loud messages of thanks to Phyllis for all her hard work and dedication.
I personally want to shout out an additional Thank You to Phyllis for producing this one final newsletter to give me time to hop up into the saddle and get comfortable. I hope to make this a smooth and seamless transition so you'll hardly realize someone else is working behind the scenes. I am very open to suggestions for improvement and new ideas. Feel free to send me your input.
Read and Rings were held throughout Area 10 last month. If you participated in one and would like to submit a short write-up of your experience, please send it in.
October is Coppers Classic month. I have had the privilege and pleasure of ringing in CC 2016 and CC 2017, under the direction of Ellie Hodder. Unfortunately for me this year, my bell choir's director decided to get married on Coppers Classic weekend keeping me in Missoula, MT for the wedding celebrations. I told him he was going to have to reschedule his wedding, but he wouldn't have any of that. If you, however, will be in the Portland area on Sunday, October 14th, I highly encourage you to attend the concert. You will hear some awesome music and might even start thinking about ringing in Coppers Classic 2019 yourself.
I'm looking forward to taking over the reins and helping to keep us all informed on what's what in Area 10. I'm also looking forward to a lot of help from all of you to keep this newsletter useful and relevant. Once again, "THANK YOU PHYLLIS!"

Notes from the Chair
Greetings!
Summer is over and most handbell ringers are back to rehearsal and performance. The church choir I ring in has been meeting for weeks and is already involved in Christmas music.
As a first order of business, I must publicly thank our out-going officers. Our chairman, Diane Hould, has been an active and caring leader of the Area 10 Board. Her articles in the Campanologist are always full of insight and show her love of our art. I am thankful that she will continue on the Board as Past Chair and hope to lean on her expertise as I take office.
Next our Treasurer, Brian Parrott, completes his term of office. During his tenure he has worked diligently to keep the finances of the Area in shape, guiding us through the day-to-day money transactions and fiscal reporting. He recently spear headed a project to rewrite the Area's Bylaws, bringing them more in line with the National organization's. We will be voting on them in the near future.
Finally, we all owe a debt of thankfulness to Phyllis Tincher our Communications Chair i.e. Campanologist Editor. For 14 years she has dutifully published this newsletter taking it from a typed, mailed newsletter to the sleek and sharp emailed document of today. Her byline column always has the most up-to-date news. It is our hope that even after leaving the Board she will stay close as she has years of data about the Area.
BUT ... Having expressed the gratitude to our departing officers, I need to make you aware of a problem in the Area. We should have had elections in September, electing a new Chair Elect and a Treasurer. (The Communications Chair and other Sub Area Chairs are appointed.) The Board has found one candidate who would run for Treasurer but is looking for someone to join our leadership team as Chair Elect.
- Do you know someone who would like to take a leadership role in moving Handbell Ringing ahead as a musical art form?
- Would this person like to be involved in planning events, clinics and other meets to bring together new and seasoned ringers furthering the fellowship of our organization?
- Could this person bring their skills to our team (Board) of dedicated handbell musicians contributing to the success of Area 10?
COULD THIS BE YOU? If you or someone you know might be ready to step into Area leadership, please contact me or Past Chair Diane Hould for further info. We would love to have you on our team!
As a last word I ask you to look over the ringing events coming up in your area. If your choir doesn't want to attend, consider going as an 'orphan'. Most of the events would love to fit you in. And if that doesn't work try to get to the final concert, supporting the performers and hearing some great bell music.

Avoiding Burnout

Do you suffer from Bell Burnout? As an Elementary Music Teacher, there are times in the year where I'm more exhausted than others. Something that helps me avoid burnout, whether it's with teaching or directing bells, is attending workshops. My students and bell ringers always know when I've attended a workshop as they become the guinea pigs for new things to try. We are fortunate to not only have workshops throughout the year in Area 10, but in other Areas as well. Check out our Area Website for different festivals and conferences that are offered throughout the year. Better yet, find a workshop in a different area. Take another bell ringer with you. Go have fun and learn something new. Don't let burnout get the best of you! Your ringers will thank you!

Coppers Classic 2018 - October 12-14
Coppers Classic
is a massed ringing event for advanced coppers handbell musicians held annually in Portland, Oregon with Ellie Hodder, clinician. Our handbell musicians are solidly coppers musicians. They have good handbell skills, a commitment to their ensemble and are the backbone of their choir. Passion and the desire to learn and grow as a handbell musician are the qualities that characterize those who will have a great Coppers Classic experience but, most of all they love handbells!
Participants come from all over the United States and Canada.
Musicians rehearse for three days and present a public concert on Sunday October 14, 2018 at 4 pm.
Area 10 Scholarship to Coppers Classic
Coppers Classic offers one adult and one full-time student scholarship. The stipend includes registration and up to $50 towards the purchase of music. Applications due by July 27, 2018. Complete details at

Our Guest conductor this year is Barbara Meinke with Ellie Hodder conducting the Bronze Conference Choir track. Participation in the Bronze Conference Choir is by application. The rehearsals for BCC begin on Friday afternoon at 4pm. Massed Ringing rehearsals begin at 7pm followed by a showcase concert.
Registration for the event will be $70/person if registered by March 1st, after March 1st registration will be $75/person. Registrations will be accepted beginning January 1st, space is limited.  Ellie holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Crane School of Music, an advanced teaching certificate from New York State and Master of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in composition from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She served as Director of Handbells at First Unitarian Church, Portland for 15 years and is currently serving as Director of Music Ministries at Murry Hills Christian Church. Ellie is founder of the Pacific NW Handbell Directors' Forum and the Pacific NW Youth Handbell Festival. In 2009, Ellie founded the community handbell ensemble, Pacific Ringers. She currently serves on the Area 10 board.

Sondra Tucker
 Sondra lives in Memphis, Tennessee with her husband of 35 years. They have a daughter and two granddaughters in Denver, and a son and his wife in Memphis. Sondra is a retired organist/choirmaster, but keeps busy subbing for other organist colleagues, except for Sundays when her bell choir, the Holy Communion Ringers of Holy Communion Episcopal Church, ring.
She serves as Past Chair and Webmaster of Area 6, and heads the West Tennessee Handbell Association, which puts on a yearly festival in early March. Sondra has been clinician for local and Area festivals and denominational conferences all over the country and will return to teaching the Master Series in Composition for HMA in Grand Rapids in July.
Her handbell music is in the catalogs of all leading handbell publishers, and she regularly completes commissions for church and community groups. She is handbell editor for Alfred Handbell, and also writes and self-publishes flute ensemble music and weird handbell music that doesn't fit the publishing niche. The Tuckers foster Shelties, and have three of our own, whom they refer to as the Wayward Dogs. They like to ride their Harleys when the weather is nice and are Houston Astros fanatics.

Events are really a great experience for everyone who takes a risk and signs up. BUT, if you're the only one you know who'd going it can feel daunting and lonely. We have a solution! Ring with us!!
The Northwest Oregon Event Choir will register as coppers for Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference (May 3-4, 2019 in Ashland, Oregon) and for the Area 10 Conference, June 28-30, 2019 in Everett, Washington.
What we will do for you:
- We will hold a couple practices in the Portland area
- We will welcome you with open arms
- We will do our best to answer your questions
What you need to do:
- Contact Ellie Hodder for a "Join in, It's Fun" registration form where you'll get your assignment
- Register and pay for the event as "Oregon Welcome Choir"
- Purchase your own music
- Practice independently and come to group practices when you are able
- Bring your great "I love handbells" personality to the group
All welcome whether or not you are an Oregonian or even a member of Area 10. Come. Want you!
