COVID-19 Update
Dear Bison Family and Friends,

As we navigate these uncertain and unfamiliar times, the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center team hopes that you and yours are safe, healthy, and social distancing as much as possible. These last few weeks have been challenging for the Center, as for all of you undoubtedly, as we worked to support our 85 students who were studying abroad or scheduled to study abroad this spring semester. We are happy to report that all Howard University students are now either at home or in a location that they deem safe and secure abroad and most have been able to continue their courses from abroad online. We will continue to support them to minimize any further disruption to their studies.

Before we left campus, we hosted several great events and activities that you can learn more about below. Unfortunately, our exciting on-campus programming scheduled for April has been cancelled, but we are working to bring you some virtual programming via Zoom Conference and new content to our social media platforms. If you don’t already follow us, please do so @HUBuncheCenter on Twitter and Instagram and Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center-Howard University on Facebook.

The university has made the decision to cancel all summer programs abroad and will determine in the coming weeks if students will be permitted to participate in programs abroad this fall. For now, any students interested in studying abroad in the fall should complete their HU applications and those of the provider programs, as best they can. You should also, however, register for classes on campus if fall programs abroad are cancelled. The health and safety of Howard University students, faculty, and staff are of the utmost importance and with that in mind we will make the most appropriate decisions as we work through these unprecedented circumstances. Any specific question regarding programs abroad should be directed to Ms. MaRaina Montgomery at studyabroad@howard.edu.

We send our very best to all students whose semesters abroad (and here at home) have been significantly disrupted. Know that we are heartbroken you were not able to complete your semesters abroad as you would have liked. We also send our best to our colleagues throughout higher education and our program provider partners who have worked tirelessly to ensure all our students are safe. We look forward to the celebration that will ensue when we send the next cohort of Howard University students off on their semester abroad. For now though…Stay safe, Stay healthy, Stay home!

Globally,
Tonija Hope Navas
Director

#ThinkGlobal Opportunities Fair
On Thursday, March 5th, the Bunche Center hosted the inaugural ThinkGlobal Opportunities Fair to introduce Howard students to 10 unique organizations with a global mission. More than 50 students attended the event and learned about special internship and employment opportunities, some of which are unique to Howard University students. The event was followed by a panel of three speakers: Dex Burns of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Jennifer Guzman of Vital Voices, and Jamila White of MercyCorps. Students were pleased with the opportunity to learn tips of the trade from the outstanding professionals and receive exceptional guidance. As this was the first event of its kind at Howard, we hope you will look forward to the evolution of the ThinkGlobal Opportunities Fair!
Russian Delegation Visits the RBC
On February 25th, the Bunche Center hosted the Department of World Languages & Cultures for a day-long seminar featuring leading, African-American Slavic scholars from the United States to disc uss the importance of diversifying the Russian studies field. Master Instructor of Russian, Dr. B. Amarilis Lugo de Fabritz, along with the sponsorship of the U.S. Russia Foundation, spearheaded the event "My Path to Slavic: Meeting the New Generation."

Panelists included:
  • Amber Walden, a 2016 graduate of Howard University in the History department, and current Master's student at King's College
  • Kimberly St. Julian-Varnon of San Jacinto College, Texas
  • Sunnie Rucker-Chang, Assistant Professor of Slavic and Director of European Studies at the University of Cincinnati

The Bunche Center's Assistant Director for Study Abroad, Ms. MaRaina Montgomery, reflects, " I have come away feeling that it is more necessary than I realized (having never been to this region) to connect HU students with resources and supportive networks that can best prepare them to navigate and face the realities of being a Black person in Russia- well before they depart." Howard University's Department of World Languages & Cultures will celebrate 60 years of Russian next year.
Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship Corner
The Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs Fellowship travelled to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for a professional development workshop on Wednesday, March 11. PRH Fellows and a few selected students were welcomed by Ms. Beverly Kirk, Director for outreach in the CSIS International Security Program and Director of the CSIS Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative and Mr. Daniel Runde, Senior Vice President and Director of the Project on Prosperity and Development. Ms. Kirk and Mr. Runde provided key insights about the field of international affairs and answered students’ questions related to diplomacy, think tanks, security and how to distinguish themselves on their path to a successful international career.
