Vigilance in Maintaining Distance
Have you been following the Governor's updates about the phased reopening of regions? Are you excited about the possibility of someday getting to sit at a restaurant? In order to continue along the path to a phased reopening, we must be vigilant in maintaining social distance practices.

With increasingly beautiful weather, more people are venturing outdoors. Even before phase one begins in our region, there is increased availability of some low-risk activities including golf and tennis, drive-in movie theaters, landscaping, and this weekend, state beaches. With this increase in activities there is an increased risk for spreading the virus. To prevent spikes in the rate of transmission, we must be vigilant in complying with social distancing regulations.

If all goes well, our region is eleven days away from beginning a phased reopening. Click here to view the Regional Monitoring Dashboard . NYS is divided into ten regions. We are in the Mid Hudson Region, which is comprised of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Sullivan Counties. On Friday five regions began phase one reopening. Unfortunately, the Mid Hudson Region is only on day 3 toward achieving a 14-day decline in hospital deaths. Assuming we continue in the right direction, we are two days behind Long Island, which is the only other region not to have achieved this metric. Not only does this number represent a painful loss of life for families across the Mid Hudson Region, with each spike in hospital deaths, we keep resetting our start date to reopen. The other big obstacle that stands in our way to a phased reopening is our new hospitalizations rate. It is currently at 2.02, which is going in the right direction. But we must bring it below 2.

The third and final category where we must improve is to increase the number of contact tracers in the region. Click here if you are interested in learning more about being trained to do contact tracing.

Last week's village board meeting opened with a presentation and discussion related to proposed development of the village owned property at the corner of Central Avenue and Water Street known as the DPW lot. Click here to view the video of that portion of the meeting . The meeting had a lengthy agenda that followed this discussion. This Week's Meeting
This week's meeting begins with a discussion about potential legislation that would expand protection of local wetlands. Click here to view the entire agenda including the link to view and virtually attend this week's meeting.

In order for our region to begin a phased reopening we must be vigilant in our social distancing, wear a mask when we cannot maintain six feet of distance, and wash/sanitize our hands frequently. If you are in a place with very few people, like a hiking trail, it is wise to keep a mask/face covering handy for instances when you encounter someone. If you observe people violating the social distancing rules, please call the Ossining Police Department's non-emergency number, 914-941-4099.

New Yorkers did an amazing job at bringing down the rate of transmission. Now we must recommit ourselves to consistency in our social distancing, mask wearing and hand washing/sanitizing practices. That effort becomes more challenging as the weather gets nicer and more activities become available. Perhaps you are motivated by a desire to protect the health of your neighbors. Perhaps you are motivated by a desire to achieve a phased reopening. Whatever motivates you to wash your hands, keep your distance, and wear your mask, please take action to protect your neighbors and to bring us all closer to a phased reopening.

I look forward to seeing you virtually, from six feet away, or with our faces covered!

With Regards,
Victoria Gearity, Ossining Mayor
Help Save a Life
Thank you to the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Ossining Elks for partnering with the Red Cross to make it easier than ever for local residents to donate blood. Click here to sign up to donate on June 13 . Bravo to the folks who have already filled the sign up sheet for the May blood drive!

In this moment when people are looking for ways to help, this is one way to potentially save up to three lives with just a short visit to OVAC. I've already signed up to donate a pint of my type O. I'm a universal donor. Do you know your blood type?
