THE NEWSLETTER
Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2021! Can you feel the excitement?!
Well I cannot pretend to say the year ended the way I wanted it to, either

Nothing quite sums up 2020 like the thrill of getting a positive Covid test on actual Christmas morning and spending the rest of the day(s) emailing/texting/calling 80+ people to tell them the news (ruining their holiday weekend as well). I hope to never experience that thrill ever again.

Though not as exciting, New Year's Day was not much better. Can't say I thought I would spend my 5th wedding anniversary in quarantine, wearing a mask in my own house, playing cribbage with my wife, and watching Les Misérables. (Drinking heavily, of course.)
I changed the lyrics in "Jenny I Got Your Number" to
"Valjean I got your number, I'm gonna make you mine! 2-4-6-0-1, 2-4-6-0-1..."

It was after the 4th time of forcing myself not to cry during the movie that I said to Liz, "what does Les Misérables mean in English?"

Her answer? "The Miserable Ones."

Ya don't say...
But it wasn't all bad, that I can say for sure. We hired some awesome coaches over the year, added so many new and friendly clients, had some kickass workouts along the way, and our business even made a profit! We also had a very strong showing in all of the charities we participated in, and we made a positive impact in our communities. (I cannot thank you all enough for your generosity and contributions in these endeavors.)

Also, the thought and care that you all showed us, your personal trainers and friends, over the holiday season, was truly remarkable. I know I do not speak for myself only when I sincerely thank you for your sincerity and appreciation. Reading some of your cards, after such a tough and arduous year, literally brought tears to my eyes.

Except I don't cry, so that would be a lie. (See Les Misérables reference above.)
And I hope you all know that we love you right back.

It is our number one priority, as we start this new year, to do our very best to keep you motivated, engaged, healthy, safe, and invigorated. Whether you make it into the gym, or we only see your beautiful faces on an iPad screen for awhile, we will do whatever it takes to help you with your health and fitness goals in the new year.

It is not going to be easy, and there will be a few obstacles along the way, but, in the words of Booker T. Washington, "nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work."

So, here's to hard work, and things worth having, in 2021!
HEALTH AND FITNESS-Y STUFF
Turns out, when writing a Health and Fitness newsletter, it makes sense to add health and fitness related content every now and then. Here's a great article my Father-in-Law sent me today, from the Washington Post titled, "Does HIIT Training Burn Belly Fat?" (click the button below).
A quick summary of the article:

  • HIIT (high intensity interval training) has been proven, in multiple studies, to reduce subcutaneous and visceral belly fat.
  • HIIT has not been proven to reduce belly fat more effectively than moderate-intensity continuous exercise, though.
  • The real benefit of HIIT is its efficiency -- you can achieve the same results, during a 20-minute HIIT workout, as you would with a 45 minute moderate intensity cardio session.
  • HIIT, in concurrence with a caloric deficit, can produce meaningful reductions in weight and body fat as well as an increase in cardiorespiratory fitness.
  • BUT, YOU HAVE TO DO IT RIGHT!
  • Your heart rate has to get into the "Red Zone" (hello MyZone heart-rate tracker),
  • you have to use difficult exercises that elicit concomitant high heart-rate responses (like squat jumps, the Versa Climber, and burpees),
  • and you need to perform them at such a high intensity that adequate rest periods are required! (You've all heard me say, a million times, "if you don't need any rest, you're not going hard enough!")

So, there ya have it. Sometimes we (your coaches) do know what we are talking about!

*Mike's Note: Do not say "training" after HIIT, as it is redundant. "Training" is the last word in the HIIT acronym.*
IN CONCLUSION
I hope you all enjoyed reading our first newsletter in the new year! I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoy writing these, and I enjoy even more your positive responses to them! I will keep 'em coming, as long as you continue to lavish me with unnecessary praise and adulation.

Yours truly,

MC Hammer

PS - I know I jinxed myself, okay. And probably in the most epic fashion imaginable. So you can keep your "I told you so's" to yourself.
