Staying Safe & Getting Vaccinated During the Pandemic
In California and across the U.S., recent data show troubling decreases in childhood vaccination, leaving many children unprotected. In comparison to April 2019, in April 2020, the number of shots given to children 0 through 18 years old in California decreased by more than 40 percent.
"This pandemic has disrupted so much, including how we're seeking preventive health care services," said Dr. Sonia Angell, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Health Officer. "During and after the pandemic, unvaccinated infants and children will be more vulnerable to dangerous diseases like measles and whooping cough. It's so important that parents make sure their children are up-to-date on their immunizations." Read the full press release here.
The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) recently released
Our Coalition has a great deal of work to do to engage with multiple partners and the media to ensure that parents and policy makers are getting the message that #VaccinesAreEssential.
In late April, in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics-CA, CIC sent out a press release also encouraging parents and care providers to contact their pediatricians to learn more about how they can make sure their children are getting scheduled for well child exams and routine vaccines. If you missed the press release be sure to check it out today.
Now more than ever we need to work together to keep our children safe and healthy. Watch for more releases and messages in the weeks ahead.

#WeThePeopleVax - Mother's Day Campaign
Once again, CIC was pleased to partner with fellow immunization coalition leaders in Arizona, Indiana and Wisconsin to develop and promote another installment of the #WeThePeopleVax campaign promoting the importance of vaccination and emphasizing our collective responsibility to protect our communities.
In recognition of Mothers Day the project
shared historical facts about the many ways individuals and organizations have supported and promoted widespread immunization for all children. We were especially pleased to highlight Dr. Nancy Messonnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady of the United States and founder of Vaccinate Your Family (previously known as Every Child By Two); highlighting the extensive work that women as mothers, scientists and advocates and others have accomplished in this arena.

April Education Hour Recap
ShotByShot - 10 Years Strong
|
ShotByShot.org
is a project of CIC and the Immunization Branch of the CDPH. This year we are thrilled to be celebrating ten increasingly successful years of making vaccine preventable disease "real" to California's communities and families and demonstrating the power of personal stories.
To mark this anniversary, the Education Committee presented a webinar on April 29 to update everyone on ShotByShot's development, growth and impact. To view or review the presentations by parent advocate Ariel Loop, BSN, RN-BC, PHN and Tammy Pilisuk, MPH and the powerful impact on learning
that stories of the experiences of real people with real vaccine preventable disease can make, go to
CIC's Education page
to watch on demand.
CIC Education Hours are offered at least 3 times a year, and the next Summer Ed Hour will feature updates on upcoming influenza vaccination season for 2020-21 flu season.
The Education Committee welcomes suggestions for future topics of interest to the immunization community and invites anyone interested in joining us in developing education and communication efforts to advance vaccine coverage.

California HPV Vaccination Roundtable
New Report of Local and Regional HPV Immunization Rates
Formed in 2018, the California HPV Vaccination Roundtable is a coalition of diverse stakeholders with a mission to prevent HPV-associated cancers and pre-cancers by increasing the California HPV vaccination rate to 80% by 2026.
For its first project the Roundtable's Data Workgroup
gathered state, regional, and county-level HPV vaccination data to assess HPV vaccine coverage and help inform stakeholder interventions. After all, without community data there is a lack of urgency about low HPV vaccine coverage and no way to monitor the impact of local interventions. These data are now available in the Assessment of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Attributable Cancers and Vaccination Rates in California: Report of Findings of the California HPV Vaccination Roundtable on the
Roundtable
website available for community stakeholder use.
Figure 9. Rate of HPV vaccine series completion among 13-year-olds by county, California, 2018 (Source: CAIR)
The Data Workgroup collected, analyzed, and aggregated HPV vaccination data from a variety of sources including the CDC-sponsored National Immunization Survey for Teens, quality performance metrics from health plans, and the statewide California Immunization Registry (CAIR). The data sources suggest that in 2018 only 28-50% of California's adolescents were fully immunized against HPV by their 13th birthday. It was also found that no county or health systems achieved an 80% vaccination rate, and rural areas had lower HPV vaccination coverage than urban areas.
The Workgroup also collected and analyzed HPV-attributable cancer incidence rates from the California Cancer Registry to identify counties with high rates of cancer.
The Workgroup created maps to identify geographic areas with low rates of HPV vaccine uptake and high rates of HPV-attributable cancer.
Importantly, this report concludes with specific recommendations for stakeholders to use and improve HPV immunization data to focus improvement efforts, address disparities, and increase HPV immunization rates to protect teens from future HPV-attributable cancers.
