ALL-SCHOOL NEWS
Parents' Nights Take Place September 22 & 23

Parents' Night for middle and upper school families will take place on Wednesday, September 22. Lower school families will have their Parents' Night on Thursday, September 23. Based on the success and efficiency of last year’s remote Parents’ Night, we have decided to conduct these gatherings via Zoom once again this year. One of the many benefits is that it allows parents with children in various divisions to participate in all teacher meetings.

Parents' Night will include a snapshot of your child's classroom curriculum and activities. This night is not a time for individual conversations about your child. Those discussions will take place during Parent-Teacher Conferences later in the year. Further details on Parents' Night will be shared next week.
COVID-19 Testing at Cape Cod Academy

As reported earlier this week, Cape Cod Academy will be participating in COVID-19 testing through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Safety (EOHHS)’s and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)'s testing program. This initiative allows us the flexibility to provide diagnostic and routine COVID-19 testing throughout the year for everyone at school. We plan to begin testing soon, but we do need parents to complete consent forms. If you have not yet done so, please complete the consent form by clicking below.

Expectations for Dress Code and Face Masks
It is very important for all students to follow Cape Cod Academy’s Dress Code Policy. The objective of the policy is to promote an atmosphere for academic success. Please read the policy carefully and review it with your child:

Additionally, everyone must wear a face covering when inside our buildings. Masks for everyone, regardless of age or vaccination status, is the most pragmatic approach at this time. We monitor this situation daily and will notify you if and when this policy changes. In the meantime, we are enforcing this policy for everyone at CCA.

The Dress Code policy and mask wearing procedures were shared with the students today. The discussion included expectations, enforcement, and consequences.
New Spaces and Places at CCA

Over the summer, a variety of spaces were redesigned at Cape Cod Academy. The new Learning Center was launched in the former Administrative Suite, the College Counseling Office was moved to one of our spacious pavilions, and Wilkens Gallery was reimagined with tables and couches for the enjoyment of our sixth- and seventh-graders. Ungermann Library was outfitted with student tables, couches, new paint, and comfortable reading areas for students in grades 8-12. New carpet was added to the Lower School Library, along with the rearrangement of book shelves and reading areas. A new fitness center is currently being created over the Upper School Gym to create an updated, appealing workout area.

LOWER SCHOOL
Lower School Arrival & Dismissal

Arrival
Parents may drop off their children either at the curbside in the circle at the school's front entrance, or they may park and walk their children into the building. When dropping off your child at curbside, please have your child exit the right side of your vehicle. Drivers, please do not exit your car.

Please do not pass other vehicles in the traffic circle, and exercise patience. If you are in a hurry, please feel free to park in the parking lot and walk your child into school. Parents who walk their children into the building should park in the lower school parking lot (adjacent to the playground) or in the senior parking lot (the lot directly on the left as you drive in the main entrance). Please note that the upper circle is for lower school drop-off, and the lower circle by the science building is for middle and upper school drop-off.

Lower school students may enter the building as early as 7:30 a.m. and should check-in when they arrive. Students must remain in the Commons until 7:40 a.m., at which time they will go outside to the playground. During the coldest temperatures and wind chills of winter, students will have the option of going to classrooms, the library, or the gym.

Dismissal
For grades K - 5, the school day ends at 2:45 p.m. Unless a child is enrolled in and participating in a school-sponsored extracurricular program, lower school students may not remain on campus without a parent after the school day concludes. As with drop-off, please exercise patience and do not pass other vehicles in the traffic circle. If you are in a hurry, please feel free to park in the parking lot and come into school to collect your child.
After-School Programs for Lower School

Cape Cod Academy is pleased to offer after-school arts and sports programs for lower school students again this year. The programs will run from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Sports will begin this fall on September 20 (see below for details), the arts program will take place during the winter, and another sports offering will be available in the spring.

Additionally, we would like to offer an aftercare program from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, if there is interest. If you would like your child to participate in an aftercare program, please let us know by clicking on the poll below:
Would you like your child to participate in an aftercare program at CCA?

Registration for the after-school sports program

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Erika Fernandes is Cape Cod Academy’s new lower school science teacher. She joins CCA from Talbot Middle School in Fall River where she taught science. In addition to teaching general science courses, she worked with the school’s music and orchestra departments to create a full “Science of Sound” unit. She was also a part of the school’s Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) Tech Leader Corp and worked directly with a VILS coach to transform student engagement through technology. Prior to her work at Talbot Middle School, Erika was the Outreach Educator for the Lloyd Center for the Environment where she taught students in grades K - 8 in hands-on, inquiry-based environmental science programs. She was integral in developing and teaching programs there and also helped many school districts develop and implement their own science curriculum maps through teacher trainings.

Erika is incredibly excited to bring student-driven, place-based, meaningful science to CCA’s lower school this year. During this first week of school, her CCA scientists began in-lab animal observations for structure and behaviors (meeting live crabs, fish, and more). She is ready for a fantastic school year with our lower school students.
