District News:
Salary Movement:
September 1st is the deadline to submit paperwork for salary movement for the 2020-21 school year. If you have any questions please call Kathy Dreier at 341-2329.

Earn $250 by referring a new bus driver:
Emporia Public Schools is in need of bus drivers for the 20-21 school year. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who may be retired, want flexibility in their schedule, or who has school days off. USD 253 employees can earn a $250 referral bonus when new bus drivers include the district employee's name on their employment application.  The $250 referral bonus will arrive after the driver has been on the job for six months. Additionally, new drivers will receive a $250 bonus on their first paycheck and another $250 bonus once training and CDL endorsement are complete. Online Enrollment for the 20-21 school year continues:
Enrollment can be completed from any location with internet access on your students' district-issued Chromebook or any other device as long as it is submitted on or before  August 5.   For the safety and well-being of our staff and district families, parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to enroll their students online. A limited number of appointments will be available at the Flint Hills Learning Center, 1624 Industrial Rd, located at the Flinthills Mall for those who do not have a computer, access to the internet, or need enrollment assistance. Call 620-341-2396 to schedule an appointment.

Enrollment Updates:
Enrollment questions are being updated to reflect the learning models that were approved by the board last night.  If you enrolled your student/s previously and would like to change your learning choice, please contact your students school or email [email protected]  Links to the approved learning models can be viewed in the Board Discussions.

New certified staff and administrators participated in a variety of training sessions to help prepare for the 2020-2021 school year.

Board Discussions:

Flint Hills Community Health Center:
Renee Hively and Jennifer Millbern from the Flint Hills Community Health Center presented a COVID-19 risk assessment dashboard for Lyon County. The information gave an overview of data related to COVID-19 that included the amount of disease spread and a review of the active cases and clusters. Board members had the opportunity to ask questions which provided further guidance when reviewing the learning models for reopening schools.

Reopening Plan Instructional Model:
Vicki Schweinler, Executive Director of Elementary Education and Wade Redeker, Executive Director of Secondary Education presented proposed learning models that were developed by district and building administrators along with feedback from staff and parent focus groups. After a discussion on the learning models, the board voted on the following models for reopening school.
Operations Reopening Plan:
Kelly Bolin, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources briefly reviewed highlights from the district's Operations Reopening Plan. The document summarizes the district's plans and aligns with the KSDE Navigating Change 2020 document. More information will be shared at the August 5, board meeting. 
FY21 Budget Review:
Rob Scheib, Assistant Superintendent of Business provided an overview of the FY 21 USD 253 District Budget and shared balance highlights from specific funds. The entire budget can be reviewed at the following link,  2020-2021 Budget
