As stewards of the public's trust, Michigan's 15 public universities are bringing their full slate of resources to bear in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, marshaling medical and health care assets, research, facilities, protective gear and equipment, and a vast range of expertise spanning the disciplines. Outreach and collaboration are central themes in the universities' efforts to address this public health crisis.
 
Each week, we will share a sample of new programs and actions the state universities are taking in their efforts to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and that demonstrate the vital missions of Michigan's public universities.
Central Michigan University
Two Central Michigan University College of Medicine faculty members are creating a program to help rural elderly residents in surrounding counties get preventive health care in their homes. The program is called Rural Older Adult Mobile (ROAM) Care: Reaching the Unreachable.

Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University senior Kennedy Dixon will be getting hands-on experience with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Dixon was chosen by MDHHS to conduct contact tracing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ferris State University
Ferris State University announced Tuesday that students will return to campus in the fall. The university becomes the seventh of the state's 15 public universities to announce fall plans, with six schools moving ahead with in-person classes despite continued health concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

Grand Valley State University
Grand Valley State University Occupational Safety and Health students have created helpful guides for health care workers that provide a step-by-step tutorial for fit-testing different styles and brands of respirators and other personal protective equipment.

Lake Superior State University
Lake Superior State University announced its plans for the early in-person fall semester, which will start on August 10. The semester will end before Thanksgiving and the spring term is expected to start on Jan. 19, designed to minimize student travel to and from campus during holidays and any resurgence of the coronavirus.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine students are set to be part of what's been identified as the nation's largest serological testing study for COVID-19 antibodies. The COVID-19 Serology Research Project is happening at Beaumont Health.

Saginaw Valley State University
Kylie Ostrofsky is one of 72 students from Saginaw Valley State University's nursing school who completed their program early so they could enter the health care workforce faster, and fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have advanced production of a new test that identifies antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The test searches for the specialized antibodies created as a result of a person being infected with the virus.

UM-Dearborn Psychology Associate Professor Brenda Whitehead developed a survey for people ages 60+ to hear about their stressors and joys during the pandemic. Whitehead began the study shortly after U.S. states began issuing "stay at home" orders. Here are some preliminary results of her research.

University of Michigan-Flint
Three hundred COVID-19 care packages were delivered to Flint residents thanks to a collaboration between the UM-Flint Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and a pair of Flint organizations. The "Keeping COVID-19 Out of Flint" initiative provides both the protective equipment and knowledge necessary to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

As part of ongoing efforts to address health disparities among vulnerable communities, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will support Wayne State's COVID-19 mobile testing program by expanding it to include free testing for older adults and their caregivers.

Western Michigan University engineering alum Andy Bornhorst volunteered his skills to improve safety for frontline health care workers. Bornhorst designed an aerosol box to protect health professionals from being exposed to the virus while treating COVID-19 patients.
