IN THIS ISSUE
Want to have some good old-fashioned fun this Friday? Join Fr. Tom and his family for a Jumbo Shrimp baseball game in Jacksonville! The game starts at 7:05 pm. If you're interested in going, please contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] for all the details.

On Sunday, June 23, at 12:30 pm, all are invited to a brainstorming session, where we'll explore how to help students at Burroughs Molette Elementary School deal with the considerable challenges they face and achieve their academic goals. Get more information here.

Rector's Ramblings

Having been away from the house for three full weeks, we had some "opening" of the house upon our return. When we are going to be away for more than a few days, we turn off water heaters, raise the temperature on the thermostats, and try to unplug anything that's not essential. We also clean out cupboards and the refrigerator, too, making sure that things that could spoil in our absence don't become an issue. Regardless, it is not uncommon to go to the pantry and get something and discover that it has gone stale in the intervening days or weeks.

Surprisingly, we didn't have too much that falls into that category this time around. The miracle of preservatives ensured that several dry foods, well-sealed, survived the time away without incident. There are few things worse, in my culinary world, than getting a cracker out of a box and getting that mushy, stale crumble instead of a flavorful crunch. Sometimes it's enough to make you want to spit it out instead of finishing the chew and swallowing!

Worship

Summer Worship Schedule
The summer worship schedule is now in effect. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica. Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, is celebrated on Sundays at 9:15 am.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Class is continuing to meet over the summer. The current study of, God Was Here and I Was Out to Lunch will end on July 14. Then the class will take a break on Sunday, June 30 and Sunday, July 7. On July 21, the group will begin a study entitled Pray Like Jesus which will run through August 28. There will be another break for Labor Day Weekend, September 1, then on September 8, the class will begin a study entitled The Gospel According to Leviticus. Read more about these books here. For more information, please contact Bob Brown at [email protected].
Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am . For the month of June, they will be meeting at Gordon Zeese's home, at 1 Tee Lane, on St. Simons Island. They will begin a discussion of American Nations: A History of the 11 Rival Regional Cultures of North America, by Colin Woodard, at the beginning of the month.  The group will continue to meet during the summer and newcomers are always welcome.  For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They will start their next book, Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor on Thursday, June 20. The book is  "...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -  San Diego Tribune

Icon Writing Workshop - August 26-30
The fourth annual icon writing workshop will be held August 26-30 in the Christ Church parish hall. The instructor this year is Kara Nelson. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon, a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. The group will work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, but you may work more or less as your eyes, body and soul are so inclined. Each day will begin with a brief worship and Eucharist filled with instruction about icons. The cost is $375. No previous experience is needed and all materials will be furnished. Just bring a lunch and a willingness to learn. Contact: Mtr. Becky at [email protected] .

Children's Books Needed
This summer, we are collecting children's books for youngsters living in Glynn County. Please bring new or gently used children's book for ages Pre-K through 6th Grade to the church office in the Parish Hall, during regular business hours on weekdays, or on Sundays, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] .

Help for Burroughs MoletteRewardsProgram
There is an ongoing need to support Burroughs Molette Elementary School (BMES) in Brunswick. Most of the school's students live in poverty, and this carries over to their academic performance. For several years Glynn Episcopal Ministries (GEM) has sponsored mentors and tutors at the school. In the coming school year, they plan to implement a reward program for individual student's successes and gains. If you are interested in helping to create and/or facilitate such an undertaking, please come to a brainstorming session with Fr. Tom in the parish hall at 12:30 pm on Sunday, June 23. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected].

Backpack Buddies
The Backpack Buddies will be packing next on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:00 am. They ' ll be delivering 60 bags to McIntyre Boys and Girls Club each Friday for children who attend St. Simons and Burroughs Molette Elementary and weekend bags to Goodyear Elementary, the host site for a summer school, to children who receive food from the Backpack Buddies program throughout the school year. The Buddies may also serve the summer school program at Altama Elementary. All are welcome to join the line and feed our children in need, in Glynn County.
